Puzzles

"Puzzles" is the first Waypoint anthology comic story, a Star Trek: The Next Generation tale published in 2016 in "Waypoint, Issue 1". It was released by IDW Publishing in honor of Star Trek's 50th anniversary and focuses on Data and Geordi La Forge.

Description

Unable to decipher a mysterious ship’s coded messages, Starfleet has enlisted its two greatest scientific minds, Captain Geordi La Forge and his best friend Data, to investigate. What they discover will alter the course of scientific human history as we know it!

Summary

Data's physical body has deteriorated. His mind has been uploaded into the computer core of the Chimer-class starship USS Enterprise, where he serves as La Forge's first officer. Data is able to project Data holograms to operate all of the ship's bridge stations, partly for the sake of interacting with La Forge.

The Enterprise intercepts the shipwrecked Federation timeship

, which has come from the far future and is repeatedly transmitting a coded message. Sakurazaka is also operated by an artificial intelligence, and Data translates the message as the Prime Directive. Data uploads himself to the timeship and engages the AI. However, the AI captain states that no commanding officer on record had ever broken the prime directive – which Data knows is untrue. He advises the AI to review the record of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, but the AI is unconvinced and sets a self-destruct timer to avoid contamination of a lesser civilization. Data commits mutiny by merging with the timeship's mainframe, allowing its crew to be beamed to the Enterprise.

The Enterprise warps out as the Sakurazaka is destroyed. La Forge undergoes a court of inquiry at Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco on Earth, and convinces Admiral Jean-Luc Picard to employ the Sakurazaka engineers in La Forge's next project, trying to reconstruct Data.
