Buffalo

The buffalo (American Bison) was a species of animal that was once native to Earth's North American continent. It was estimated that there were once millions of buffalo that travelled in huge numbers across the continent. In the 21st century they became quite popular as livestock, but they were extinct by the 23rd century.

In 2266, Professor Robert Crater compared the M-113 creatures to the buffalo, when millions of them roamed the surface of planet M-113. (TOS novelization: The Unreal McCoy)
