A power cell or battery was an energy storage device capable of powering technology and freestanding devices, as well as being capable of being installed in vehicles, starships and space stations. They often served as ammunition for phaser and disruptor weapons.
History and specifics
James T. Kirk and Spock replaced a power cell to open a door in an underground Vulcan facility. They also removed power cells from the Gorn's systems to disrupt the flow of coolant. (TOS video game: Star Trek)
During the time during the Dominion War that the crew of the USS Defiant were operating out of Starbase 375, the crew would celebrate using up phaser array power cells in battle by displaying the canisters in the mess hall. (DS9 episode: "Behind the Lines")
A single power cell would conventionally last a year, but demands of war saw the Defiant crew use one per mission. (DS9 - The Dominion War novelization: Call to Arms...)
