The goal of this project is to find out which Star Trek episodes and films really contain specific dates (of the Gregorian calendar variety) or can otherwise be tied to a specific date without resorting to any speculation, like the assumed correspondence of one thousand stardate units to one Earth year, or the unconfirmed idea that stardate XX000.0 corresponds to 1 January.
Fact list
- Each fact stated in the following list needs to cite which episode or film it is from.
- Relevant dialogue should be quoted exactly.
- Only enter facts, not speculation.

Facts without discussion or where all disagreements have been resolved may be transferred from the sections below to this list so long as they include the date in which the episode or film is set to an accuracy of at least one calendar year.
- The columns of this table are as follows:
- Title: the name of the episode or film
- Stardate: the full stardate or range of stardates given in the episode or film
- Date: as much of the date of the episode that is known, given in "YYYY-MM-DD" format
- Reasoning: an explanation of how we know when this episode or film is set; can include quotes, descriptions of visual material, and references to the placement of other episodes or films
- Notes: additional relevant facts

Strange New Worlds
- SNW: "A Quality of Mercy" (1457.9): In this episode, Christopher Pike experienced an alternate version of the events first depicted in TOS: "Balance of Terror" (2266) and said that these events were "[s]even years into the future" from his present. Thus, this episode must be set in 2259.
Because stardates in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are often in the same range as those from Star Trek: The Original Series, they are kept separately in this section to avoid confusion.

- TAS: "The Magicks of Megas-Tu" (1254.4): This episode's stardate would seem to place it in 2265, as it would put it before TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (1312.4–1313.8; 2265). However, it features Dr. McCoy, who did not become ship's surgeon until after "Where No Man Has Gone Before". It also features sets as they are in the rest of Star Trek: The Animated Series and similar to the standard ones of Star Trek: The Original Series as opposed to the considerably different sets of the second pilot. This holds for the uniforms. Finally, the stardate is an outlier for The Animated Series, which mainly uses four-digit stardates beginning with a four or a five, and is season 2 a six or seven. This fits with the series' placement after The Original Series.
- The following episodes have stardates that place them between TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (1312.4–1313.8; 2265) and TOS: "Charlie X" (1533.6–1535.8; Thanksgiving, 2265 or 2266):
- TOS: "Mudd's Women" (1329.8–1330.1)
- TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver" (1512.2–1514.1)
- TOS: "The Man Trap" (1513.1–1513.8)
- TOS: "Charlie X" (1533.6–1535.8): Kirk states, "On Earth today, it's Thanksgiving." In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Per the stardates from this episode, it must take place between the episodes "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (1312.4–1313.8; 2265) and "Balance of Terror" (1709.2–1709.6; 2266). Therefore, this episode must be set either on 23 November 2265, or 22 November 2266.
- The following episodes have stardates that place them between TOS: "Charlie X" (1533.6–1535.8; Thanksgiving, 2265 or 2266) and TOS: "Balance of Terror" (1709.2–1709.6; 2266):

- TOS: "The Naked Time" (1704.2–1704.4)

- The following episodes have stardates that place them between "Balance of Terror" (1709.2–1709.6; 2266) and "A Taste of Armageddon" (3192.1–3193.0; 2267):
- TOS: "The Squire of Gothos" (2124.5–2126.3)
- TOS: "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" (2712.4)
- TOS: "Miri" (2713.5–2717.3)
- TOS: "Dagger of the Mind" (2715.1–2715.2): Helen Noel referenced having met Kirk at "the science lab Christmas party." This episode references Christmas and takes place several episodes after a Thanksgiving reference.
- TOS: "The Conscience of the King" (2817.6–2819.8)
- TOS: "The Galileo Seven" (2821.5–2823.8)
- TOS: "Court Martial" (2947.3–2950.1)

- The following episodes have stardates that place them between "Balance of Terror" (1709.2–1709.6; 2266) and "Space Seed" (3141.9–3143.3; 2267):
- TOS: "The Menagerie, Part I" (3012.4–3012.6)
- TOS: "The Menagerie, Part II" (3013.1–3013.2)
- TOS: "Catspaw" (3018.2)

- TOS: "Arena" (3045.6–3046.2)
- TOS: "The Alternative Factor" (3087.6–3088.7)
- TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday" (3113.2–3114.1)
- TOS: "Space Seed" (3141.9–3143.3):
- This episode's stardate places it between "Balance of Terror" (1709.2–1709.6; 2266) and "A Taste of Armageddon" (3192.1–3193.0; 2267). It therefore must be set in 2266 or 2267.
- Furthermore, various lines from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (8130.3–8141.6; 22 March 2283) indicate that this episode is set fifteen years before the film, placing this episode in 2267 or 2268.
- As a consequence of these two facts, "Space Seed" must be set in 2267.
- The following episodes have stardates that place them between "Space Seed" (3141.9–3143.3; 2267) and "A Taste of Armageddon" (3192.1–3193.0; 2267):
- TOS: "The Return of the Archons" (3156.2–3158.7): Kirk notes in his log they were "trying to find some trace of the starship Archon that disappeared here a hundred years ago." An okudagram from ENT: "In A Mirror, Darkly" provides the contact date as 2167. Therefore, this episode must be set around 2267.
- TAS: "The Practical Joker" (3183.3)

Furthermore, they must take place before the end of Kirk's five-year mission (since they are part of it), which Icheb gives as 2270 in VOY: "Q2" (54704.5; 2377 / 2378). Therefore, the following episodes are set in 2267, 2268, 2269, or 2270:

Therefore, the following episodes are set in 2267, 2268, 2269, or 2270:
- Unknown
- Star Trek: The Motion Picture (7410.2–7414.1)
08xxx
- Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (8210.3):
- Various elements within this film indicate that it is set immediately after the previous film, The Wrath of Khan, which was set on 22 March 2283. This would place this film in 2283 as well, likely in late March or early April.
- This is contradicted by a commemorative plaque(X) for the USS Excelsior which appeared in PIC: "The Star Gazer", which gives the vessel's launch date as 2285.
- Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (8390):
- Kirk states in his Captain's log near the opening of the film that he and his crew are in "our third month of our Vulcan exile," following the final events of The Search for Spock, which takes place in early 2283. Thus, the 23rd century portions of this film must take place around the middle of 2283.
- Upon traveling to the 23rd century, Gillian mentions that she has "three hundred years of catch-up learning to do," though this seems to have been a casual approximation the time difference. The same is true for Kirk's reference to the HMS Bounty mutiny, which took place in 1789, having occurred five hundred years ago (from his own time).
- Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (8454.1):
- Within this film, there are several references indicating that it takes place within three weeks of the previous film, which would put it in mid-to-late 2283.
- There are several other factors that may seem to suggest other dates for this film. However, they are based on speculation, such as the assumption that the colony on Nimbus III was established by the Treaty of Organia. Without any solid evidence for this and other points, this film must be set in 2283.
09xxx
- Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (9521.6–9529.1):
- Leonard McCoy says, "For twenty-seven years I have been ship's surgeon aboard the USS Enterprise." If McCoy was only referring to his service aboard the USS Enterprise-A, this film would be set no earlier than 2310, as the Enterprise-A was launched at the end of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (8390; 2283). However, the first scene of Star Trek Generations, which takes place after this film, is set in either 2292 or 2293. Therefore, McCoy must be referring to the sum of his service on the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) and the Enterprise-A.
- Since McCoy had joined by 2266 per TOS: "Balance of Terror" and had not by the start of the mission in 2265 per "Where No Man Has Gone Before", he must have joined in either 2265 or 2266. This means that The Undiscovered Country can be set no earlier than 2292. No upper limit can be found using this method, as McCoy could be using the twenty-seven year figure as a duration rather than a difference.
- However, since The Undiscovered Country is set before the opening scene in Generations, which, as mentioned above, is set in 2292 or 2293, this gives 2293 as the latest this film could be set, meaning that it is set in either 2292 or 2293.

- According to a commemorative plaque(X) seen in PIC: "The Star Gazer", the USS Enterprise-D was launched in 2363 on stardate 41025.5. Since TNG: "The Neutral Zone" (41986.0) is set in 2364, it follows that all episodes with stardates within this range are set in 2363 or 2364.

In TOS: "Journey to Babel" (3842.3–3843.4; between 22 March and 31 December 2267), Dr. McCoy said of Sarek: "After all, you're only a hundred and two." Sarek corrected him, "102.437 precisely, Doctor, measured in your years." Therefore, these episodes are at least 99.563 years apart and at most 100.563 years apart. - This episode takes place immediately before TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II" (44001.4–44002.3; between 1 January and 5 November 2366).

- Furthermore, this episode is set after TNG: "Sarek" (43917.4–43920.7; between 13 October and 5 November 2366), so it can be set no earlier than 13 October 2366.

- This episode's stardate places it between TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II" (44001.4–44002.3; 2366) and TNG: "Galaxy's Child" (44614.6; 2366). Therefore, this episode must also be set in 2366.
- In one of Data's personal logs, he says, "This is the 1,550th day since the Enterprise was commissioned.... [E]vents occurring today include... a celebration of the Hindu Festival of Lights [Diwali]...." In 2366, Diwali will occur between 31 October and 5 November, with the main Diwali on 3 November.

- In TNG: "Unification I" (45233.1–45240.6; 2370), Data and Jean-Luc Picard view a record of Pardek at a trade conference. Data states it was four years ago, which would place it in 2365 or 2366. Furthermore, the record was dated stardate 44623.9, which is after this episode's stardate. When combined with the previous point, this places this episode in 2366.
- This episode's stardate places it after TNG: "Data's Day" (44390.1; between 31 October and 5 November 2366).
- Therefore, this episode must be set between 31 October and 31 December 2366.

- Crusher and Vash were talking and Vash said she met Picard on Risa, in "Captain's Holiday" (43745.2; between 1 January 2365 and 5 November 2366). Crusher says to Picard, "That must have been during your vacation last year." Therefore, "Qpid" must take place in 2366 or 2367.
- Furthermore, this episode must take place no earlier than 31 October 2366 because its stardate places it after TNG: "Galaxy's Child" (44614.6; between 31 October and 31 December 2366).

- VOY: "Displaced" (50912.4)
- DS9: "In the Cards" (50929.4)

- DS9: "Call to Arms" (50975.2): This episode is set five years after DS9: "Emissary" (46379.1–46393.1; 2370), which was when Benjamin Sisko took command of Deep Space 9. In this episode, Sisko says, "When I first took command of this post, all I wanted was to be somewhere else, anywhere but here. But now, five years later, this has become my home and you have become my family." Therefore, this episode must be set in 2374, 2375, or 2376. However, this episode's stardate places it before VOY: "Scorpion" (50984.3; 2374 or 2375). Therefore, this episode must be set in one of those years.
- VOY: "Scorpion" (50984.3): In the episode "The Gift" (51008–51030), The Doctor states that Kes was in contact with Species 8472 "a few days ago," as depicted in VOY: "Scorpion". Since "The Gift" is set in either 2374 or 2375 and no earlier than fifty-six days, seventeen hours into 2374, this episode must also be set in either 2374 or 2375.
51xxx
- VOY: "Scorpion, Part II" (51003.7): This episode's stardate places it between two episodes that are either set in 2374 or 2375. Therefore, this episode must be set in either 2374 or 2375.
- VOY: "The Gift" (51008–51030):
- In the past scenes in VOY: "Fury", The Doctor is considering Schweitzer as a name for himself. Those scenes must therefore be set between "Eye of the Needle" (48579.4; 2371), when The Doctor first becomes interested in taking a name, and VOY: "Heroes and Demons" (48693.2–48710.5; 2371), when he takes on the name Schweitzer. Therefore, the past scenes in this episode must be set in 2371.
- Furthermore, the computer states that Voyager has been in the Delta Quadrant for "fifty-six days, seventeen hours." In the past scenes, the future Kes says that her past self will leave Voyager in three years time, referring to the events of "The Gift". This places "The Gift" in either 2374 or 2375 and can be set no earlier than fifty-six days, seventeen hours into 2374.
- Because VOY: "Hope and Fear" is set in 2374, 2375, or 2376, and VOY: "The Gift" is set in either 2374 or 2375, all episodes with stardates between them must be set in either 2374, 2375, or 2376.

- VOY: "Night" (52081.2): VOY: "In the Flesh" is either set in 2375 or 2376. VOY: "Hope and Fear" is set in 2374, 2375, or 2376. The stardates in "Night" place it between these two episodes. Therefore, it must either be set in 2374, 2375, or 2376.

- VOY: "Timeless" (52143.6–52164.3): In this episode, Captain Janeway says, "Four years, two months, eleven days. That's precisely how long Voyager's been in the Delta Quadrant." - Star Trek Generations (opening scene): The intertitle between this scene and the next reads "78 Years Later". Since the rest of the movie takes place in 2371 and the opening scene takes place seventy-eight years earlier, it must be set in either 2292 or 2293.

- Dulmur states that stardate 4523.7 (TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles") was "A hundred and five years, one month, and twelve days ago," and Lucsly added that it was "A Friday." "The Trouble with Tribbles" is set in 2267, 2268, 2269, or 2270. Therefore, "Trials and Tribble-ations" must be set between 2372 and 2376.
- Furthermore, in "Trials and Tribble-ations", Starfleet is still using the Starfleet uniform of the late 2360s–early 2370s. By "The Darkness and the Light" (50416.2; 2371 / 2372 / 2373 / 2374 / 2375), they had transitioned to the Starfleet uniform of the 2370s–early 2380s. Therefore, this episode can be set no later than 2375.
- VOY: "Human Error": In "Endgame", Seven of Nine refers to the events from this episode as having taken place three months in the past. Given that "Endgame" is set between 5 April 2378 and 31 December 2378, "Human Error" must take place between December 2377 and September 2378.

Furthermore, it must take place before stardate 52902.0, the effective date for the Treaty of Bajor signed after the end of the war. Therefore, it takes place between stardate 52889.3 and stardate 52902.0.
- DS9: "What You Leave Behind": Given that this episode is set between "The Dogs of War" and the effective date of the Treaty of Bajor, it must be set between stardate 52889.3 and stardate 52902.0.
