Forum:Unary star system

Just curious, why use the term "unary" and not "solitary"? (They seem interchangeable, but maybe they aren't - the nuance escapes me.) Is either term mentioned on a display graphic somewhere? I was wondering how many "unary star systems" there are (see here), but there's no page that lists all the unary systems. -LauraCC (talk) 17:56, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

Searching the word "unary" gets 200 results, only 4 of which are not system pages. -LauraCC (talk) 04:03, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

It was a mistake on my part. The correct term would be single star system. I am working on fixing it.Memphis77 (talk) 16:53, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

AFAIK neither term is used in-universe. If you do create a page for that, the {{Multiple star systems}} should be renamed to include single star systems. -LauraCC (talk) 16:56, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

How many have you changed so far? Maybe a bot could do it quicker. -LauraCC (talk) 17:00, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

If Memphis77 doesn't finish it by the time I get home, I'll look into a bot run. I'd say it shouldn't have a page if the term wasn't used in-universe, but that doesn't stop us from using it in pages and sidebars, obviously, since it's the correct term. 🖖 Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontribs) 17:06, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

Is there any value to changing "The real-world information added to the article was current as of 2025." to ""The real-world information added to the article is current as of {{CURRENT YEAR}}." ? -LauraCC (talk) 00:18, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

BTW, there's still some instances of "unary" in the body of the article, not just the infobox. -LauraCC (talk) 00:25, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

Wouldn't solitary be a better term? That had to been said at one point in Trek life? ‐ Yaroze86 (talk) 00:58, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

Not according to Scriptsearch, unless it's in SNW, PRO, or ST, or on a display graphic. -LauraCC (talk) 01:00, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

I've finished correcting everything with my bot.
"Single star system" is a real-world term. "Solitary star system" is not. This phenomenon (a star system with only one star) isn't ever given a name in Trek AFAIK. Therefore, we use the real-world term, not an invented one.
Laura, I have no idea what you're talking about above... and it's {{CURRENTYEAR}}, not {{CURRENT YEAR}}. 🖖 Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontribs) 02:01, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

It's a recurring phrase in the background notes for these stars. I wondered if there was value in future-proofing the phrase (as in, it's correct up to now, whatever year now is, to be changed when it's no longer true, on a page-by-page basis).

And the spacing error was because of autocorrect. -LauraCC (talk) 02:05, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

Can you give an example of a page that uses this phrase? 🖖 Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontribs) 02:08, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

Cursa, second paragraph, last sentence. -LauraCC (talk) 02:10, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

I'd say leave those the way they are. That way, when browsing in future years, someone might notice that the year is far in the past and therefore check to see if any updating is needed. If changed to {{CURRENTYEAR}}, it could give a false impression if these pages aren't all updated immediately. 🖖 Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontribs) 02:19, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

Yeah, I guess who wants to wade through page histories to figure out when it was added. Okay, thanks. -LauraCC (talk) 02:22, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
