Captain Marvel is a cosmically empowered high-flying hero. The original Captain Marvel was Mar-Vell, a Kree operative who deeply infiltrated Earth, but became inspired by its people and eventually ascended as the Protector of the Universe. After he succumbed to cancer, the life of the Captain Marvel was honored on by many others. Monica Rambeau, with her light-based powers, acted as Captain Marvel within the Avengers. The genetically engineered son of Mar-Vell, Genis-Vell took on the name when embarking on adventures in the cosmos. His sister, Phyla-Vell, shared the identity as well, eventually becoming associated with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Most prominently, Carol Danvers, the former Ms. Marvel, who had been in close contact with Mar-Vell during his mission on Earth, has permanently claimed the mighty legacy of Captain Marvel.
