Manga Rec!!!: Loveless

Just really have to rec this manga right now!

I've just ordered it myself, and while I haven't read it yet, I have watched all of the anime series the manga is based on, and it is so so goood!

Loveless:vol 1 cover

I just bought it off amazon.co.uk and it's £4.78 new, and from £3.33 used and new. Bargainous!^^

Keep reading for a brief plot summary, and pics, as well as mangaka info!

Mangaka: Yun Kouga (mangaka of Earthian and Ren Ai, if you like the artwork get Loveless too - or just get Loveless even if you haven't heard of the other two!)

Plot: This is a mixture of what I know from the anime series, and what Anime News Network (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4877) has to say about it.

The two main characters are Aoyagi Ritsuka (the boy on the front cover of the manga) and Wagatsuma Soubi. Ritsuka has a pretty traumatic homelife - his older brother's recently died, and his mother's not the most stable of women, no mention of his father - and he's just moved to a new school, but has no interest in making friends or even doing well in class, as he's grieving and has mentally retreated from the world.

One day he finds Soubi waiting for him after school, to tell him that he knew Ritsuka's brother, and that he was his brother's 'fighter'. Naturally Ritsuka has no idea what Soubi is on about - what's a 'fighter' and what does it have to do with his brother?

Turns out there's a secret society of paired people, where one of the pair is a 'fighter' and can unleash psychic attacks on another pair, and the other of the pair is a 'sacrifice', which is to say they get the wounds if their 'fighter' doesn't succeed in protecting them, and it's also from them that their 'fighter' gains most of their strength.

How these pairings came about, or why exactly they fight one another isn't entirely clear, but at least some of the pairs have been genetically engineered, and there are (of course) some bad guys who are manipulating the pairs for their own purposes.

Basically the anime, and, from what I've heard, the manga, are about the growing relationship between Ritsuka and Soubi as they get to know one another - as Ritsuka struggles to find out what exactly happened to his brother, and as Soubi tries to get Ritsuka to become his new 'Sacrifice' now that his old one (Ritsuka's brother, Seimei) is gone.

Very heavily hinted yaoi in this series - it never actually happened in the anime, but I don't know whether the manga will continute beyond the end of the anime, or stop where it did (I'm hoping it continues, but hey, I'm just a fangirl!).

~~~> Also, this anime had a very french feel to it - in the music, and the drawings themselves - which I normally wouldn't go for, but somehow it just works in this!
