Last week, much of Chicagoland and northwest Indiana, where I grew up, were hit by tornadoes and back-to-back thunderstorms. Indiana got hit especially hard and has had repeated blackouts. Gary has been hit especially hard. A lot of people are without power or food, in addition to damage to their homes or cars. Whiting, Indiana, which is also mentioned in the AP article above, was already several months into a union lockout by the local BP refinery when the storms hit. East Chicago, which regularly gets screwed over by environmental damage and pollution, just had a large fire that set their power restoration back again too.

Please consider donating to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana or the Gary chapter of the NAACP if you can. Both organizations have been providing free food for residents who can't refrigerate anything at this time. These are neighborhoods with large black and latino populations as well. If anyone else has links to local organizations, please drop them below!

“We’re the Blackest city out here, so they don’t want to check on us.”

More than 20,000 residents in Gary, Indiana have been without power for almost two weeks after massive storms tore through the area, knocking down trees and power lines.

NIPSCO is the only energy provider in the area, and they reported more than a half a billion dollars in profit in the first half of 2026.

“We don’t pay, we get cut off. But when disaster happens, they want to charge us. They have billions of dollars, we’re working day-to-day.”

Gary residents are banding together to provide for each other amidst the blackouts, providing community meals and phone charging stations at community centers.

To be fair the cheese curds I’ve had from Wisconson (coworker from there always brought them home) were much better than any I’ve had in Oregon. The cheese? Well I haven’t been to Wisconsin but there are some great cheeses in Oregon. Tillamook raised the bar so now all the small cheese companies in Oregon have to pull out all the stops just to be noticed.

we do have pretty shitty roads it must be said
