Breeding, Marshall. Open Systems in the age of Library Services Platforms: Meeting expectations for interoperability and extensibility. March 2022. Library Technology Guides. Open systems allow organizations to gain access to data and to create new functionality beyond what is directly delivered in an application. Libraries expect their systems to come with robust functionality accessed via the built-in user interfaces. Beyond these user interfaces, most organizations also need to move data in and out of their applications through automated scripts or through real-time interactions with other systems. Application Programming Interfaces, or APIs, are the technical mechanism expected in modern software applications to enable interoperability, access to data, and to support the creation of scripts or modules to perform related functions.

Breeding, Marshall. New President at Ex Libris. January 2021. Smart Libraries Newsletter. ProQuest has named Oded Scharfstein the new president of Ex Libris, effective January 2021. He will succeed Bar Veinstein. Ex Libris has been a portfolio company of ProQuest since October 2015.

Breeding, Marshall. Smart Libraries Q&A: Impact of annual price increases for subscriptions. January 2021. Smart Libraries Newsletter. With the current ILS market constricting into only a few players for academic libraries, how sustainable for a long-term strategy is the current subscription pricing model of 5% annual increases? Especially when a library's ILS consumes a large block of operations budgets, which don't grow at that pace, if at all. Libraries can cut serials and book budgets, but there is little flexibility for an ILS. You either have one or you don't. Do you see a potential crash where the same libraries who migrated to Alma or World- Share a few years ago are forced to migrate to open source systems, given the projected declines in higher education in general? Also, what do you recommend as an appropriate ratio between the annual cost of a library's inventory management system and the annual cost of a library's inventory to use as a determining factor of when to jump away from a particular ILS?

Breeding, Marshall. Ex Libris Acquires RapidILL. August 2019. Smart Libraries Newsletter. In a move that expands its exiting involvement in resource sharing for academic libraries, Ex Libris has acquired RapidILL from Colorado State University. This acquisition expands the company's existing strategy to develop resource sharing products based on its Alma library services platform. RapidILL will continue as a service available to all libraries regardless of the automation systems used. Ex Libris and Colorado State University position this acquisition as an opportunity for RapidILL to see faster software development and to expand its presence globally.

Breeding, Marshall. ProQuest and Ex Libris Reorganize Latin American Operations. February 2019. Smart Libraries Newsletter. ProQuest and Ex Libris have reorganized and consolidated their operations in Latin America. This move is consistent with a longstanding strategy where Ex Libris has steadily shifted away from working through distributors for sales and support in specific regions to direct operations through wholly owned offices or subsidiaries. It also reflects a growing integration between ProQuest and its Ex Libris subsidiary.

Breeding, Marshall. New Leadership for ProQuest and Ex Libris. July 2017. Smart Libraries Newsletter. The board of directors of ProQuest has announced that Matti Shem Tov, President of Ex Libris, will assume leadership of the entire ProQuest organization, succeeding current CEO Kurt Sanford. This change comes a year and 4 months after the acquisition of Ex Libris, a move that significantly expanded the position of ProQuest as a content, services, and technology company for libraries. This move represents an interesting change in ProQuest where the top leadership comes from the technology sphere rather than the publishing industry.

Breeding, Marshall. ProQuest to Acquire Ex Libris. November 2015. Smart Libraries Newsletter. In a move that alters the business dynamics of the library technology sector, ProQuest has announced that it will acquire Ex Libris in a deal expected to close later in 2015. Ex Libris, under the ownership of Golden Gate Capital since November 2012, will become a wholly owned business of ProQuest. This merger significantly extends ProQuest's offerings of technology-based workflow and resource management tools and places a broader portfolio of products under the responsibility of Ex Libris. While this merger represents a major step in the evolution of the industry, it is not anticipated to compromise the availability of current product offerings. Longer-term product strategies will be developed over time in collaboration with the company's customer base.

Breeding, Marshall. Shared Infrastructure Projects Gain Momentum. September 2015. Smart Libraries Newsletter. Recent months have seen a number of announcements of large consortia or library systems that have chosen to implement library services platforms in a shared configuration. Ex Libris Alma has emerged as the leading product in this sector, with Innovative's Sierra, OCLC WorldShare Management Services and ProQuest Intota also represented.

Breeding, Marshall. Ex Libris Acquires oMbeil, Introduces Leganto. June 2015. Smart Libraries Newsletter. Ex Libris has made an incremental step in expansion beyond the library technology arena, acquiring oMbeil, a company based in the United Kingdom known for campusM, a mobile and portal platform that enables institutions to provide a variety of services to students via a hosted, software-as-a-service platform optimized for mobile devices. This acquisition does not involve further consolidation in the library technology industry, but reflects the increase dominance of mobile access and the interest of Ex Libris in serving the broader campus environment.

Breeding, Marshall. Crossing the Threshold: Boston College Places Alma into Production. August 2012. Smart Libraries Newsletter. On July 2, 2012, the Thomas P. O'Neill, Jr. Library of Boston College became the first to place Alma, the library services platform created by Ex Libris, into production use. The library migrated from an Aleph system in place since 2000. Boston College had been working with Ex Libris since mid-2009 as a development partner, testing each incremental release of the software, and providing constructive feedback. The library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, with a staff numbering around 120, and a collection of 3.5 million volumes.

Breeding, Marshall. Ex Libris: Alma, Aleph, and Primo. March 2012. Smart Libraries Newsletter. Ex Libris has made progress across multiple products. There have been developments with Alma, its new unified resource management platform, Aleph, one of its integrated library systems, and with its Primo discovery product.

2025 Ex Libris Accomplishments Narrative

General Overview

In 2025, Ex Libris advanced its unified platform strategy to help libraries work more efficiently, collaborate at scale, and deliver greater value amid growing complexity. Alma continued to expand globally, surpassing 2,800 institutions, while introducing major workflow and staff-experience improvements, including redesigned interfaces, Agentic AI capabilities, Library Open Workflows, stronger consortial support, and deeper Linked Open Data alignment.

Rialtos full integration into the Ex Libris product family strengthened end-to-end, data-driven collection development and informed fulfillment across purchasing, sharing, retention, and deselection, with tighter connections to Alma, Rapido, and Leganto. Resource sharing continued to grow and evolve across RapidILL, Rapido, and INN-Reach, alongside the announcement of Rapido Consortial Borrowing for large consortia. Primo accelerated discovery innovation through rapid adoption of Primo Research Assistant, Natural Language Search, and the New Discovery Experience, supported by expanded Linked Open Data and analytics.

Ex Libris also introduced Alma Specto to apply AI to the enrichment and presentation of digital collections, and Leganto expanded its impact on teaching and learning with the Syllabus Assistant and continued growth in global course support. Behind these solutions, Content Operations improved metadata quality and timeliness and expanded discovery coverage, while Customer Care strengthened responsiveness and transparency through AI-assisted support and the Known Issues Portal.

Alma

Alma continued to expand its global customer base in 2025, surpassing 2,800 institutions worldwide by years end. Alongside this growth, Alma advanced its evolution as a modern, cloud-native library services platform, with a strong focus on efficiency, interoperability, and the staff experience.

Significant interface redesigns delivered faster, more intuitive workflows across core areas of daily work. The introduction of the new Title Search and enhancements to Patron Services streamlined tasks in acquisitions, cataloguing, and fulfilment, reducing friction and improving usability. These updates reinforced Almas ongoing commitment to an easy-to-use, highly customizable, and personalized user experience that supports efficient and consistent staff workflows.

A major step forward in redefining the staff experience was the introduction of a conversational staff interface powered by Agentic AI. This capability enables more natural interactions with the system, helping staff complete tasks more simply and efficiently while increasing productivity and operational effectiveness.

Alma also expanded its platform flexibility with the rollout of Library Open Workflows (LibOW). Built on Almas open-platform architecture and extensive API ecosystem, LibOW allows libraries to automate and customize workflows across Alma and external systems without requiring extensive development resources. This strengthens Almas role as an interoperable hub within the broader library technology environment and supports growing demand for adaptable, cross-system processes.

Support for complex organizational models continued to advance, particularly for consortia and multi-library systems. New capabilities, including a centralized configuration dashboard, simplified the management of shared policies and services, improved coordination across institutions, and enabled scalable operationswhile preserving local autonomy where required. By the end of 2025, major consortia such as OhioLINK had 88 institutions live on Alma and Primo.

At the same time, Alma deepened its commitment to Linked Open Data by embedding LOD concepts directly into routine workflows. Native support for BIBFRAME through an integrated LOD Editor, compatibility with multiple metadata formats, and seamless hybrid MARC-to-LOD transitions enable libraries to create richer, more connected metadata aligned with emerging data-sharing standards.

Community-driven innovation remained central to Almas development, with 65 customer ideas completed during the year, representing 8,751 community votes. The year also saw several prestigious institutions join or go live on Alma and Primo, including the British Library, the University of Melbourne, the Federal Reserve System, and the Smithsonian Institutionunderscoring Almas continued growth and its evolution into a more powerful, intuitive, and future-ready platform for libraries worldwide.

Rialto

At the beginning of 2025, Rialto officially joined the Ex Libris academic library portfolio, strengthening an integrated, end-to-end approach to academic library workflows. This move supports a more efficient and seamless staff experience by shifting toward informed fulfillment based on a holistic, data-driven view of the library environment. As part of this transition, Rialto expanded its marketplace capabilities, enabling libraries to make context-aware decisions at the point of acquisition, such as selecting open access resources or initiating resource-sharing requests, alongside traditional purchasing options. In addition to this expansion, during 2025 agreements were signed with two major aggregators: Browns and Kortext. These partnerships will, in 2026, significantly broaden the Rialto marketplace, both in terms of the volume of available content and the diversity of content types they bring.

The year marked a pivotal expansion in how Rialto supports the full spectrum of collection development activities. Capabilities now extend beyond single-title acquisitions to include broader workflows such as retention and deselection, available to all Alma institutions. These workflows enable collaborative, data-informed decision-making through project-based recommendations and consolidated actions that are fully integrated within Alma.

Rialto also continued to serve as a central hub connecting Ex Libris solutions, including Rapido, with enhanced integrations such as in-marketplace visibility of resource-sharing information to support informed fulfillment decisions. Additional enhancements include course-related badges, citation linking through Link and Add to Cart actions, and new filters and facets that help libraries identify materials aligned with current and future courses, further strengthening integration with Leganto.

Through these developments, Rialto now enables a more holistic approach to collection development, helping libraries maximize impact in the context of constrained budgets and limited staff capacity.

Resource Sharing

In 2025, the Ex Libris resource sharing ecosystem continued to evolve, with RapidILL, Rapido, INN-Reach, and the newly announced Rapido Consortial Borrowing strengthening collaboration, streamlining workflows, and expanding access to shared collections worldwide.

RapidILL focused on community-driven refinement, delivering targeted enhancements that improved automation, digital delivery, and turnaround times. By years end, the RapidILL community had grown to more than 850 institutions across 39 countries.

Rapido expanded steadily, with 118 institutions going live during the year and 289 libraries active by the end of 2025. New capabilitiesincluding ebook lending, Docline integration, and smarter fulfillment workflowsimproved efficiency and reduced staff workload, further establishing Rapido as a flexible, modern resource sharing solution.

Ex Libris also announced Rapido Consortial Borrowing, a new solution designed for large consortia both academic, public and statewide systems, scheduled for launch in 2026. The platform is intended to support equitable access to shared resources while preserving local autonomy and simplifying cross-system collaboration.

INN-Reach continued to power large-scale resource sharing networks, supporting more than 1,300 libraries and enabling approximately 3 million filled requests annually.

Across all platforms, request volumes grew by approximately 10 percent year over year, reflecting increasing adoption of access-based, collaborative models. Together, these developments underscore a unified strategy focused on faster, smarter, and more equitable resource sharing across libraries of all types.

Primo

Discovery innovation accelerated in 2025 with advances across search, user experience, analytics, and artificial intelligence. Primo continued to evolve as a modern discovery platform, combining trusted library data with AI-driven capabilities to improve usability, inclusiveness, and research outcomes.

A major highlight was the rapid adoption of Primo Research Assistant, Ex Libris first AI-powered discovery tool. By the end of 2025, more than 550 institutions had activated it in production, with usage exceeding 100,000 searches per week. Ongoing enhancements focused on improving answer quality, transparency, performance, and seamless integration within the Primo experience.

Primo also introduced Natural Language Search, enabling users to search in plain, conversational language while continuing to deliver structured, relevant results aligned with local configurations. In parallel, the New Discovery Experience (NDE) delivered a modern, accessible interface designed to surface special collections and unique local content. More than 150 institutions participated in early access, and 23 were live by years end following general availability in November 2025.

Beyond interface innovation, Primo expanded its use of Linked Open Data to more than 11 million entity pages and introduced Mixpanel analytics, giving libraries deeper insight into patron behavior. Together, these developments reinforce Primos evolution toward a more intuitive, intelligent, and research-centered discovery platform.

Alma Specto

In 2025, Ex Libris introduced Alma Specto, an AI-powered digital collections platform designed to help libraries manage, enrich, and showcase unique digital materials at scale. Built on the Alma platform and Ex Libris SaaS infrastructure, Alma Specto addresses the growing complexity of digital collections, particularly the challenge of making non-textual and under-described materials more discoverable.

Developed in close collaboration with nine partner libraries, Alma Specto reduces back-office effort while improving visibility and accessibility through native AI capabilities such as automated metadata enrichment, tagging, and entity extraction. The platform supports end-to-end workflowsfrom ingestion and cataloguing to presentationwhile enabling visually rich, interactive exhibitions for both expert and general audiences.

By the end of 2025, Alma Specto was available to libraries, with early adopters signed globally and initial go-lives planned for early 2026, followed by digital preservation capabilities later in the year.

Leganto

2025 was a strong year for Leganto, reflecting its growing role in supporting student engagement and the integration of library resources into teaching and learning. Legantos customer base continued to expand in 2025 with over 460 institutions now using the platform, including 36 ARL members.  In 2025, Leganto supported over 400,000 courses across 35 countries, serving 2.6 million students and managing more than 43 million citations. In the United States alone, Leganto helped libraries and institutions save an estimated 30 million dollars in course material costs by improving access to library-provided and affordable resources.

Engagement extended beyond traditional library interactions, with Ex Libris working closely with faculty, students, and campus leaders to better understand instructional needs and challenges. These insights informed continued enhancements to Legantos role as a bridge between library collections and the classroom.

A notable milestone in 2025 was the introduction of Legantos first AI-powered capability, the Syllabus Assistant. This feature enables instructors to upload a course syllabus and automatically generate a complete course reading list. The assistant identifies cited references and matches them with materials available in the librarys collections, providing students with direct and cost-effective access to required resources.

During the year, more than 2000 course material lists were created using the Syllabus Assistant, demonstrating early adoption and value. Such developments reinforce Legantos position as a key platform for enhancing teaching, learning, and student success through deeper integration of library resources into the academic experience

Content Operations

In 2025, Ex Libris Content Operations focused on increasing the value and reliability of library content services through higher-quality metadata, faster update cycles, and enabling faster turnaround for new collection creation across the Alma Community Zone and the Central Discovery Index (CDI). These efforts were aimed at reducing manual effort for libraries while improving discovery, linking accuracy, and confidence in shared knowledge bases.

Significant progress was made in metadata quality and timeliness. Nearly one million Alma Community Zone bibliographic records  were enriched during the year, including more than 400,000 enriched using AI-supported processes, strengthening catalog accuracy and content discoverability. Update cycles were accelerated to near real time, and new content availability also improved substantially through a fully automated content ingest process. Discovery coverage expanded through the addition of ~490 million records to CDI, including increased open access content and improved linking, enhancing search results and full-text accessibility in Primo and Summon.

Collaboration across the content ecosystem continued to deepen. Engagement with libraries and content providers supported improved alignment on metadata standards, release priorities, and quality expectations.

By the end of 2025, more than 170 providers participated in the Provider Platform, alongside over 30 providers sharing their Manifest files, accelerating content delivery and improving consistency across systems.

These combined improvements contributed to increased confidence and adoption of shared knowledge bases. Community Zone usage continued to grow, underscoring the expanding importance of centralized content services in enabling efficient library operations and discovery at scale.
