The best movie about the stress of doing a PhD ever.
A fairly standard, if entertaining, historical drama about Britain’s role in the partition of Palestine and the Arab revolt against it. It is not exactly BATTLE OF ALGIERS territory by any means. But the subject matter in the current environment, and the fact it was made by a female Palestinian director, filming in Palestine around the genocide, make it feel quite special. In fact, my dominant thought as l watched it, was how on earth did this get made at all? We can only be glad that it did.

Can we just agree THE SUBSTANCE is a B horror movie with an A list cast and budget? Everything is even labelled with large text, just like a 1950/60s sci-fi B movie. I didn’t object to its politics & see why it has resonated with so many people. Moore is great, as is Qualley (who is amazing in everything). And there is heaps of ominous footage of palm trees to give it a Lynchean LA vibe. But its execution was pretty ham…
