Transit Toronto began in 1997 when Aaron Adel and James Bow got together to produce a website celebrating Toronto's subways and streetcars. Both had grown up in the 1980s, and the TTC was a big part of how they got around in their teenage years; everybody remembers their first car, but for Aaron and James, the TTC provided that blast of independence. For that reason, they remain fans of Toronto's transit agencies. Toronto public transportation networks have a lot of history behind them. The precursors of the TTC have been serving Torontonians since 1849. The TTC itself lagged behind North America in abandoning its streetcars, and thus became the forerunner in North America's streetcar revival. Public transportation in Toronto has affected and continues to affect the character of the urban fabric in the Greater Toronto Area. For this reason, the TTC and its associated agencies have many fans who share stories, photographs and other memorabilia. Historians have logged the development of public transit in Toronto for decades. And since 1997, Transit Toronto has grown and evolved to provide a home for such research, advocacy and appreciation. Today, Transit Toronto has over 5,000 photographs of public transit vehicles and properties, some just days old, others showing scenes from near the turn of the century. We have detailed histories of the Toronto subway and most of its streetcar and bus routes. We have charted the development of public transit in the Greater Toronto Area and how it has shaped the urban region that now houses over five million people. We have dozens of contributors offering interesting news items, historic photographs or other items to help build the site. Our site has been quoted in the media, and now serves as an important internet resource for researchers in the history of public transit in the Toronto area. And this is in addition to maintaining a current news service, alerting visitors to upcoming meetings, service changes, disruptions and other items of interest to public transit passengers. All of this has been done by a group of dedicated fans who are doing this out of love. We are not affiliated with the TTC in any way, and we certainly do not take any money from them. But operating this site costs money and time. We have hosting fees and bandwidth costs to deal with.
