How does your game fit the theme?
Humanity saw a danger and acted, believing it was in control, but everything observed was already five seconds in the past... By the time they understood what actually happened, it was already too late. They missed a crucial detail about an upcoming threat by 5 seconds.
Story / Context
An object was detected on a path toward Earth. It was labeled an asteroid, and the situation was treated as a problem already solved before it was truly understood. A massive laser was build to destroy the threat and save humanity.
When the planetary laser was fired, the world cheered...but the truth arrived a few moments later: The asteroids surface opened, and the beam was reflected back toward Earth. Humanity started a war because of a 5 second delay.
Not all of humanity died. But that day marked the moment the species learned how costly it is to be even a few seconds behind.

The way you managed to integrate the story and make it feel believable through elements of reality is, to say the least, brilliant! I really liked the concept of the five-second delay in space, and I’d say it was applied excellently throughout the entire context of the scene.
Focusing on silhouettes instead of details was a smart choice—it makes the story more engaging by allowing us to fully focus on it without getting distracted by details that could break immersion. And what can I say about the voice acting? It was fantastic!
Honestly, I have nothing to complain about regarding the scene; everything fit together very well for me. The scene truly has a strong “game introduction” feel, which opens up possibilities for reusing it at some point, if that’s something you’d like to do.
The only point where I might suggest an improvement is the subtitles. While they do their job well, I felt they stray a bit from the overall aesthetic. Perhaps using black text with soft white outlines and a background box with around 50% opacity or less could help them blend better with the rest of the elements.
Overall, though, it was an incredible piece of work. Keep it up, and I wish you the best of luck in the jam!
Thank you so much! I'll keep the suggestion.regarding the subtitles definitely in mind.
My first 5/5 audio. With voice acting, what did you expect? XD
I have a question though. Yes we do see into the past, but so would they right? How did they know we were about to fire? Does their communication travel faster than light?
Overall, very enjoyable and an unexpected take on the theme.
Thank you!!!
You are totally right. This was my 'idea': They would have a technology allowing 'real-time' observations and already prepared for the laser (earth needed to build the laser first, right? They watched the whole time). Then they waited for the humans to fire and pressed their own button... :D
This was a really fun watch, awesome entry! Could see it working very well as an opening cutscene. The story has good pacing, giving each plot point enough time to breath without repeating itself of dwelling too long. The twist of the asteroid being 5 seconds further away than they thought due to the effects of space on light/time was super cool and a great take on the theme. The art style works and has a nice consistent minimalist vibe throughout. The voice acting was a nice touch. Like another comment said the dialogue presentation could be improved. It feels a bit rushed, and the font/colors/presentation don't really fit the rest of the cutscene. But it was still good to have subtitles. I also appreciated the slight screenshake when pressing the volume keys, fun detail. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much!
simple but functional cutscene... really nice but if I can give a piece of advice I would say to change the font type and color, for the rest excellent work keep it up
Thank you!
Yes, eventually I realized zhe subtitles design is not the best, I'll keep that in nind for future projects:)
nice entry. I liked the art style and loved the scientific explanation! It was overall really good.
If you haven't already, please try mine too!
Thanks!
Already tried and commented. Good one :)
a great work! a perfect intro to a game, and it even hides the main mechanic inside it! what i got from it (to a scientist): from asteroids reference frame, they open the mirror before earth fire laser. so they have the ability to predict future. so they leave some human alive on purpose, so they do this for a reason... like they are cursed by knowing in all? they are floating in space looking for sth new? so human/player need to find real unpredictable moves that the player cannot know the concequences. mechanic would be predict the unpredictable, control the random... a great cutscene
Thank you so much! I love how you interpret the scene. It is not like the alien race is able to predict the future though. My idea was: They observed the earth the whole time, thus, knew humanity built a laser for shooting them. But they are able to 'watch' in real-time due to some very advanced technology. This way they just waited for humans to fire the laser and immediately revealed their ship. So..For the aliens everything happens in real-time, while for humanity everything is 5 seconds too late :D
really good story, and love the connection to the theme!
Thank you!
There is a lot to like here, but you really hit the right spot for me, when there was a equation with the lightspeed showing the five second time!
As for the rest? The audio part was great. The sound focuses you from the start, and keeps you till the end. Also- I always appreciate voice acting in jam games, so there's that :)
The graphics? The minimalist silhouettes work fine. It's how the camera work presents the plot, and how you use every second of the time limit, where your submission shines! I could easily see this as an intro to an x-com style game!
Great work!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate such a feedback from someone creating those great games and scenes! :)
I also love voice acting and try to improve step by step. I am better in doing robotic like voiceover than doing emotions xD
Needed to include science as a scientist :DD
You are a legend
its an real intro for a game!!
Thank you!
Very nice take on the theme, I think you found a unique storytelling point. Peaceful voice fits nicely with your way to tell the story - piece by piece, stating facts, lack of emotions.
What hooks me most are transitions - there are so many of them. When I watch again, I can notice even more smart transitions, which is great.
First, I didn't believe you are working with real math, so I googled, and hell - you are :D
Thank you!
I never done these kind of transitions or scenes for my games. So I wanted to try out some things. Glad it worked out.
The storytelling and theme really shines in this cutscene. Kudos to you for including the science/math behind it.
Thank you! I tried to connect the story in a unique way.
A very strong sequence that could easily serve as the intro to an action game. The interpretation of the theme is also interesting and certainly unique.
Cinematography:
The interesting transitions make this scene stand out. The transitions begin right from the menu, and especially the brief cut to LIVE TV when the laser is fired is fantastic and very cleverly done. I’m impressed—this is a really intelligently structured scene.
Visuals:
The Visuals are simple but effective. They remind me a bit of Flashgames. The angular art style adds to the piece’s uniqueness.
Audio:
The voice acting felt somewhat too emotionless to me at times. It came across more like a report than a narrative. However, the sound effects supported the narration quite well. In addition to the drums, I could have imagined a deep horn or generally a bit more music overall (for example, something Inception OST–like). In my opinion, the audio could have been refined a bit more.
Storytelling and Theme:
This is where the piece truly shines! It’s an absolutely creative interpretation of the theme, and I really enjoyed the storytelling.
Overall, a great contribution with distinctive transitions, solid narration, and an interesting interpretation of the theme.
Thank you so much!
Ohhh I Read that you are a scientist? :D
Yees, but I am using microscopes...no telescopes :DD
Ohhh :) thats cool. Ive studied biology (and music). I love Sci-fi explanations in Games :)
Uhhh, another biologist! Nice :D May I ask what specific subject? I am a microbiologist :)
Ohhh thats so cool. We should do a Jam together some time :D
My main focus during my studies was human biology. For example, I studied forensic science. Of course, I also had microbiology and worked with a photometer, among other things.
Nice!
1.5 million kilometers!
thats farther then the moon! (384,400 kilometers)
i love how you added real world science into this
the voice kinda sounds ai but that fine
Thank you! I am a scientist...I needed to! :D
It is actually my own voice...soo thanks..? :DD
oh sorry about that 😅
Pretty good ! I loved this but i was sad about the things that it isn't a game
Thanks!! Haha, maybe there will be a game made out of this story one day :D
