I really like the aesthetics, and the concept is cool. I found it quite challenging, so it would benefit from checkpoints as I never finished the level, but I had a good time playing. I could definitely see this being developed into a full platform game. Great job :)

This game is cute, and I love speedgames focused on moving quickly and smoothly through levels. However, I don’t have a mouse, so putting spears on the mouse buttons of all things renders this game literally unplayable. There is never a reason to use mouse inputs for things that aren’t positional, so they absolutely do not belong in a platformer like this one. You almost fixed it with your controller support, except that only recall is mapped, not throw. This feels like what you’d get if you asked somebody who has only played FPS games to make a 2D platformer.

Developer

Sorry for the inconvenience. I joined the game with a day and a half left so I was mostly scrambling to make it playable, let alone accessible. I use mouse in platformer games myself because it feels more natural, and my own keyboard is very limited on its own (no arrow keys). The controller support was there by default in Unitys input system and I never tested or used it because it wasn't intended

Nice to see another game featuring spears as the main object used! It's fun to play, but I do think having checkpoints would make the game better as you could then choose whether you want to continue from a checkpoint or reset fully for a better time.

Developer

Yes this was possibly going to be the plan but the level isn't extremely long so I wasn't sure if it'd be too easy. Thanks for the feedback!

Cool idea!

I really like the idea for this, and I believe it could be expanded a lot into a full platformer game.

Having a limited number of spears forces the player to think about how they want to use them, and it's cool that you can sometimes draw out a bit of a puzzle element in some of the sections. But it would also be cool if you could draw specific spears back and not all of them at once, so you could create some challenges that require sections of more then 3 spear jumps. If you do end up doing this, I wonder how well it would work to only have 2 spears instead and working between the two.

There are some levels of simple polish that can help the game out a lot, Ill just list out a few ideas that came to mind as I was playing

  1. Spears should have a different color than the spikes, although not hard to tell them apart, it should be clearer.
  2. Spears seem to stick into walls at variable lengths. Could probably teleport the spear to the edge of the block after it lands.
  3. Spears can be thrown way off screen, and take awhile to come back.
  4. Effects for spears landing / recalling. Would add a lot of juice to them, and feel very satisfying to use.
  5. The jump does feel a bit floaty, but having the y movement stop when you let go helps a lot.
  6. Blind falls are generally not fun, even when you don't kill the player, especially when there is risk of losing a lot of progress.

I do wish this game had checkpoints, since losing all of your progress can be pretty though to then decide to try it all over again. I think it would suit the game well to break it up either into smaller levels, or a long level with checkpoints. Then you can also make harder challenges ;)

Great work! I'd love to see where this could end up with some additions!

This is a gif of the spear looping around the player. But I think Itch broke gifs :(

Thank you for the great feedback! If I continue developing the game I'll definitely take some of this into account

Neat gameplay, and I love the visuals, but it's very unforgiving. I think adding checkpoints and Coyote Time would make it more enjoyable.

Developer

These were both in the plan but I joined late on a whim and overestimated how much time I would have. Thanks for the feedback!

The concept is very good, and though the controls could use some refinement, I found they rarely got in the way while I was playing. One thing that stood out to me is that the game feels like it wants to be a slow paced puzzle platformer, but has things like the timer always being visible, which did feel like unnecessary pressure when trying to plan out how to deal with obstacles, and the lack of checkpoints make it extremely frustrating should you mess up later on in the level, which seems like it’d be more in line with a faster game. That all being said, as far as I got, it was fun to try and figure out each obstacle and use the spear platforms in different ways.

Developer

I agree the game was meant to be slower paced initially, but with time constraints on level design I tried to make it fit with a short level better with a speed running design. Thank you for the feedback!

Very good! Definitely one of the better games I've seen from the jam so far. The concept is pretty good, and it fits the theme pretty well.
