As a borderline Gen Xer, I grew up on Oregon Trail, so you had me at hello. I realize you ran out of time and couldn't do everything you wanted with this, but the amount of work already put in (in three weeks!) is wildly impressive. Could definitely tell that the township visits and the weapons at the starting point were meant to be something more. I still had a good time with this though! The only thing missing was someone dying of dysentary.  lol

In terms of feedback, I did feel like the events fired pretty often, but the trail was short, so I would imagine in a full game, they would be spread out more. I'd also changing the idle stance of the people in the cabin away from the fighting stance. That was hilarious, but didn't fit.

Overall, for what you were able to accomplish, great job!

Developer

Thank you. Oh yeah  I had to cut a lot. Dysentery is in there, right now it just tanks  your thirst. The animation pack I was using only had that fighting idle anim. I meant to change it out but got lost in the time crunch. Cheers!

I think this is a unique idea to bring to VR. Trying to replicate the Oregon Trail gameplay style isn't something I would have ever thought to do, but your jam entry shows that there could be something here if further developed.

I saw that there were supposed to be mini-games included in this, and I think it would have brought way more to the table gameplay wise.

I did struggle a bit trying to figure out what I was doing. A tutorial section could have helped explain things and helped with guidance. I neglected that with my game and left people floundering 😅.

The amount of UI you put into the game was impressive. I ended up with a ton of UI in mine and it killed my progress. It's really can slow down the project and feels like death by 1000 cuts. For your UI, I noticed events would happen and it would require me to grab the status board constantly. For events that change statuses frequently, you might want to consider something that remains visible, or is easily displayed with a simple button click. I love the immersive aspects of your solution, but grabbing the clipboard and having to navigate with the other hand began to feel more intrusive over time.

You packed a ton in, in a short amount of time! Thank you for the entry, and I hope you join for the Halloween Jam!

Yeah the ui and getting the right data tied into it ate up a lot of my development time. I finally learned how to use scriptable objects during this jam so it was worth it just for that experience alone. Cheers!

My entire game is practically scriptable objects! They are life savers. Happy to hear you learned about them this jam!

Really enjoyed playing this - great job! Definitely had a summery feel and you captured the whole hiking vibe perfectly.

I can see how the mini-games would've fitted in and it's a shame they were chopped, it would've made it quite a different experience. In it's current form, it does feel a bit random rather than skill-based to complete the trails, but still enjoyable none the less...

I did find a few issues. One where if I went right instead of left out of the house, I instantly completed the trail and the UI stayed on screen forever. Another where the campers stats stayed the same all the way through the trail...

(...and yeah, like others, I would've liked the snap turn option)

But overall, I can see where this was going and it's a great Jam entry and enjoyable to play :)

Developer

Thank you yes I was bummed I had to cut the mini games but as the deadline approached, I knew I had to. I loved your mixed reality game very charming and polished. As far as the bug turning left outside of the house to instantly complete the trail I never experienced that one. Unfortunately I never had time to have anyone play testother than me. Cheers!

Interesting concept! I liked that clipboard in the beginning, very clever UI. I missed that red button in the beginning of the trail so my campers never showed up. I had to watch the video afterwards to see them. I could have certainly used snap turning instead of the smooth turning. Too bad about the mini-games being cut!

Hi, thank you your game was so charming. I’m definitely gonna go back and check it out again. I meant to spawn the player right in front of the button and lock their movement until they hit it, but I forgot to do that. Also a lot of people mentioned not having snap turn so I will definitely be adding that from now on. Cheers!

I remember the old Oregon Trail on the Apple IIGS. Playing this version now kind of feels like a JRPG where when you move you don't know what you will encounter or what might pop up when you walk along the trail. I died but I think I was pretty close. My camper stats didn't change and I couldn't see their profile pic on my page but I imagine the stats were changing they just weren't visually getting updated in the log. Very cool and unique concept though, I could see each of the encounters being turned into a mini-game similar to a JRPG where you then have to apply medkits or bandage your fellow companions, maybe even cook food to progress.

Developer

Hi, thank you and yes, you’re basically describing my original intention with the game unfortunately, I had to cut a lot of of it just to get a serviceable game loop in time for the deadline. The stats and pictures  worked throughout development, but then something happened right at the end there.

I lost :/ I enjoyed the game very much. However, the game requires snap turns, the turns are very fast :) There was also no change in the campers' stats.

Developer

hi thank you yes, a lot of people are reporting the stats weren’t going down which is strange because it worked throughout development. Funny how those things happen and yes, a lot of people are requesting snap turn so thank you. I will be including that from now on.

I won. I think a couple of my peeps were starving or something, but they made it. :)   Interesting concept. I definitely enjoyed Oregon Trail as a kid in computer class. Especially the hunting, of course. Too bad that mini game had to be put on the chopping block.

Oh, by the way, since you're using Hurricane, I highly suggest putting their Settings UI panel in there somewhere so I can calibrate height (I play seated), and switch to Snap Turning (I get immediately nauseous with smooth turning). No matter how many years I've been playing and building for VR, I still have to do these things as I haven't seemed to be able to fully grow my "VR legs".  Also it would help to make the raycast area larger for your journal book tabs- pretty small targets atm.

Developer

Hi, thank you for checking it out. I was bummed I had to cut the mini games as well. I will definitely be keeping the settings UI in if I use hurricane again and keeping that snap turn available for players almost everyone who tried it mentioned not having the snap term. I meant to make the ui interactable bigger but wasn’t sure how to outside of scaling the buttons up. You say increase the raycast areas I will have to check that out. Cheers!
