I got shot in the face so hard the game crashed! Made me smile though.
I wasn't able to get the gamepad to work - I just kept spinning or walking forward. I think it was reading area that should be in the analog stick's dead zone as input directions. Keyboard felt good though.
The use of visuals was really good. I liked how it looked, particularly the forest.
The dialog popup was oppressive. It filled the screen and had a single sentence of text on the top.
I was warned to dodge the projectiles. went fine till the vault. got hit by more than one i guess and game closed on me xD
Movement feels awesome. Zooming through the areas and that it looks like you kinda cut the corners is really nice.
I like the crafting. Map from the start would've been nice but unlocking it felt good too :D
Health recovery options seem scarce but thats just because there is a lot of walking. There is plenty of potions and campfires. Felt like i would run out eventually but its really generous in that regard ^^
Music is top. Switches between combat and ambience music are done very well.
The tile usage was good too! Walls especially in the forrest looked great. The pickups looks nice and are easy to spot. I liked that there are lots of enemies with attack animations :D
Overall great title. Sadly you ran out of time, i like that this was mentioned ingame. Felt like i still finished the game ^^
Really nice! I had a lot of fun until I crashed within the amber vault, not sure if I was close to the end or not. Really nice use of transparency in the forests to give a lot of depth with simple tiles. I liked figuring out the enemy patterns. And collecting mushrooms, of course. Played very nice with controller too, I love that!
I really enjoyed the movement and the upgrade/craft system. Combat was straightforward and enjoyable, but I did also have trouble with the arrow crashes. I tried avoiding them as much as possible but sometimes it was just too hard. With a fix, this'll be really really cool.
Crashed a few times but I did end up in the amber vault, but didn't find the spore. Cool entry, I enjoyed the combat and the movement was great. If you go a bit quick you clip through the walls but fairly minor. I didn't quite understand what all the items were for except the potions, maybe I missed something with that.
I very much loved how you had to craft to get a compass and a map ui (and the more usual things like health potions and such).
It was a quite large tutorial area, and when I suffered a crash, I didn’t do it again but just started with the main game. I was a bit scared that skipping tutorial (as it almost allowed you full gear) would off-balance the game, but it was forgiving enough, which I much appreciate.
It was nice to work around the patterns of the different enemies to avoid taking damage and it was fun exploring the maps. They were a bit large though and since there wasn’t much variation on textures within each zone, it got quite hard to navigate. Which for me was solved by looking a whole lot at the map. So I’m wondering if it wouldn’t have been better to either make the levels a bit smaller or have a bit more texture variation within the levels to assist the player a little.
In the end I got another crash after having gotten quite far, I think. So unfortunately I did miss out on the end.
Playthrough:
Thanks for playing! Glad you liked it and had fun. Ya the levels were designed by my 9 yr old son so they were a little big and i ran out of time to flesh them out further. I'm 99% sure the crashing is when arrows hit the player and despawn. Next time i'll have to implement a local save system so you can pick up from where it last saved. You are correct in that the tutorial was designed to both make the game easier (by giving you an upfront start) but also to teach the systems - so going straight for the portal was "hard mode". So i'm glad the balance of that worked out - seems like you barely survived the forrest on the 2nd run but then were able to collect most of everything in the 2nd level.
Unfortunately I also ran into issues with crashes but I think I made it most of the way through and had a good time with it. It's simple but I enjoy the bump combat, reminds me of Ys 1 and 2. The crafting was also nice to see and worked well.
@mana - Thanks for playing i'm glad you had fun. Thanks for the video recording its great to watch people play the game. You got pretty far without crashes - i'm pretty certain its the arrow shooting monsters who crash the game when their arrows hit you :(
Ys and Cadence of Hyrule were inspirations for the bump combat. There are 4 monsters in the game and each have a unique behaviour that you can learn to take no damage.
Nice entry, I’ve made it to the third or fourth level I think? Game crashed on me in the tutorial zone, but then I was able to play it smoothly for quite a while.
I loved the movement, it’s very snappy and responsive. I didn’t really understand the combat, felt like bumping into enemies just worked. I also was able to craft everything, but didn’t see the use for iron ore I found later in the game. Do I need to equip the sword somehow, and/or do I need to craft the second sword?
Kudos for using raylib!
Here’s a video of my play-through (sorry for the voice volume, didn’t realize that my mixer is sending game sound alongside voice this time):
@apoly - Thanks for posting the video its great to watch someone actually play it. I definitely see where i need to put a few more explainers in about inventory. Also you did combat just fine - i didn't get as much depth into the system as I wanted so you can basically just bum rush the monsters. Ya raylib is great and not-so great - its easy to use but also you have to do everything yourself that you normal take for granted in game engines. Every game I make with it though i'm slowly building a library and it makes future ones easier - its not for the faint of heart to jump off normal engines in favor of raylib though - you got to want it hard. Thanks for playing!
It's a shame about the crashes and I feel your pain :( I can't get very far without the game crashing on me, but I liked what I saw so far :D Crafting is a nice feature and I like that the enemies have different behaviours. But I couldn't get through the first world without random crashes. I think they happen when arrows hit you? Not quite sure if that's related. I also like the starter tutorial area, I think it was very helpful to get to know the systems, and I liked the map design with some things peeking above the treeline. I wish I could seen more of the game!
@frib - Ya i think its something about how the arrows despawn after doing damage that causes the crashes. If you can fiercely dodge the arrows it seems like you can make progress pretty far. Thanks for playing!
