Of special relevance for the NP vs. DP debate are nominals in which the determiner has other valu... more Of special relevance for the NP vs. DP debate are nominals in which the determiner has other values for number, gender, case and/or person than the noun, for depending on whether such nominals share these values with the noun or with the determiner they provide evidence in favor of either the NP or the DP approach. This paper discusses some nominals of this kind and shows that they share the relevant feature values with the noun. It then develops an NP analysis for these nominals which is cast in the notation of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar. It also shows what a DP analysis would look like. A comparison reveals that the NP analyses are less complex, more uniform and less stipulative. Examples are taken from Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Serbo-Croatian.

A treebank-driven investigation of predicative complements in Dutch : An efficient, practical, actually usable approach

Treebanks are used for various purposes in language technology, but the wealth of data they conta... more Treebanks are used for various purposes in language technology, but the wealth of data they contain can also be put to good use for the purpose of linguistic description and linguistic theory. To demonstrate this I will show how the treebank of the Spoken Dutch Corpus can be exploited to improve our understanding of what it is that distinguishes predicative complements from other types of complements. Section 1 shows why this distinction matters, section 2 provides a brief presentation of the treebank, section 3 gives a comprehensive survey of the intransitive predicate selecting verbs, based on the treebank data, section 4 presents a number of factors which can be used to differentiate the predicate selecting uses of the relevant verbs from their other uses, and section 5 summarizes the results. 1 2 Other studies which have exploited the CGN treebank for the purpose of linguistic description include Van der Wouden et al. (2003) and Bouma (2004). 3 The labels for the lexical categories are abbreviations of Dutch terms; BW, for instance, stands for bijwoord 'adverb' and WW for werkwoord 'verb'.

Following a common practice in generative grammar, HPSG treats the determiners as members of a se... more Following a common practice in generative grammar, HPSG treats the determiners as members of a separate functional part of speech (DET), just like the complementizers, the coordinating conjunctions, and (in some frameworks) the auxiliaries. The status of such functional parts of speech is a matter of debate and controversy. The auxiliaries, for instance, are commonly treated as members of a separate category (AUX or INFL) in many variants of generative grammar, including GB, MP and LFG, but in GPSG and HPSG, it is a matter of equally common practice to treat them as members of V and to reject the postulation of a separate functional category, see (Pullum and Wilson 1977) and (Gazdar, Pullum and Sag 1982). This text makes a similar case for the determiners; more specifically, I will argue that they are categorially heterogeneous, in the sense that some determiners are members of A, whereas others are members of N. The argumentation is mainly based on inflectional morphology and on morpho-syntactic agreement data. The consequences of the categorial heterogeneity are hard to reconcile with the specifier treatment of the determiners of (Pollard and Sag 1994), and even more with the Detas-head treatment of (Netter 1994), but it can smoothly be integrated in the functor treatment of the prenominals of (Allegranza 1998) and (Van Eynde 2003b).

In HPSG the link between the main verb and its arguments is canonically modeled in terms of argument inheritance, also known as argument composition or generalized raising. When applied to Dutch, this treatment yields a number of problems, making incorrect predictions about the interaction with the binding principles and the passive lexical rule. To repair them this paper proposes an alternative, in which subject raising and complement raising are modeled in terms of different devices. More specifically, while subject raising is modeled in terms of lexical constraints, as for English, complement raising is modeled in terms of a more general constraint on headed phrases. In Dutch V-final clauses the verbs tend to form a cluster which cannot be split up by nonverbal m... more In Dutch V-final clauses the verbs tend to form a cluster which cannot be split up by nonverbal material. However, Haeseryn et al. (1997) as well as other studies on the phenomenon list several cases in which the verb cluster may be interrupted by cluster creepers. The most common examples are constructions with separable verb particles, but examples with nouns, adjectives, and adverbs are attested as well. Since the majority of the data in previous studies is collected by introspection and elicitation, it is interesting to compare those findings to corpus data. The corpus analysis is based on data from two Dutch treebanks (CGN and LASSY), which allow to take into account regional and/or stylistic variation. This is an important aspect for the analysis, since cluster creeping is reported to be a typical property of spoken and regional variants of Dutch. The goal of this corpus-based investigation is on the one hand to provide insight in the frequency of the phenomenon, and on the other hand to classify the types of cluster creepers. Besides the linguistic analysis, methodological issues regarding the extraction of the relevant data from the treebanks will be addressed as well. 1. Example-Based Treebank Querying

The recent construction of large linguistic treebanks for spoken and written Dutch (e.g. CGN, LAS... more The recent construction of large linguistic treebanks for spoken and written Dutch (e.g. CGN, LASSY, Alpino) has created new and exciting opportunities for the empirical investigation of Dutch syntax and semantics. However, the exploitation of those treebanks requires knowledge of specific data structures and query languages such as XPath. Linguists who are unfamiliar with formal languages are often reluctant towards learning such a language. In order to make treebank querying more attractive for non-technical users we developed GrETEL (Greedy Extraction of Trees for Empirical Linguistics), a query engine in which linguists can use natural language examples as a starting point for searching the Lassy treebank without knowledge about tree representations nor formal query languages. By allowing linguists to search for similar constructions as the example they provide, we hope to bridge the gap between traditional and computational linguistics. Two case studies are conducted to provide a concrete demonstration of the tool. The architecture of the tool is optimised for searching the LASSY treebank, but the approach can be adapted to other treebank layouts .

In a subset of these languages, however, some verbs select an infinitive instead, i.e. in constructions known as infinitivus pro participio (IPP). The phenomenon is well-studied with regard to Dutch and German, but for Afrikaans an extensive study based on empirical data is still lacking. In order to fill this void, the present paper uses a corpus study to identify the verbs whichobligatorily or optionally-take the IPP form in Afrikaans. Verb classes showing the IPP effect in Afrikaans, Dutch and German are compared, and crosslinguistic similarities and differences are identified. The result is a corpus-based typology of IPP verbs in the three languages in question. Zusammenfassung: In den westgermanischen Sprachen wäre eigentlich zu erwarten, dass Perfekt-Hilfsverben immer ein Partizip Perfekt selektieren. In einer Untergruppe dieser Sprachen selektieren einige Verben jedoch einen Infinitiv, den so genannten infinitivus pro participio (IPP). Während dieses Phänomen hinsichtlich des Niederländischen und Deutschen bereits eingehend erforscht worden ist, fehlt zum Afrikaans bisher eine umfangreichere, empirisch fundierte Studie. Um diesem Mangel abzuhelfen, werden in dem vorliegenden Beitrag mittels einer Korpusuntersuchung diejenigen Verben identifiziert, die im Afrikaans-obligatorisch oder optional-in der IPP-Form auftreten. Wir vergleichen die Verbklassen, die auf Afrikaans, Niederländisch und Deutsch den IPP-Effekt zeigen, und stellen Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den Sprachen fest. Das Ergebnis ist eine korpusbasierte Typologie von IPP-Verben in den drei betroffenen Sprachen.
