McDonald’s “hack” story is being framed around 861GB and screenshots. That’s noise. The contrarian takeaway for CIOs and CISOs in India and GCC: most ransomware wins are not “advanced”. They are supply chain and identity failures across franchise ops, vendors, and the shadow IT that runs day to day. "I don’t answer international calls — they’re scams." It’s a belief many of us share, but reality is more complex. Case in point: Andhra Pradesh CID recently cracked a major international cybercrime network that siphoned off more than ₹20 crore, with 14 people arrested—including foreign operators (The New Indian Express). Here’s the twist: The gang didn’t just ring from abroad. They used SIM-box technology to convert international calls into local Indian numbers, tricking victims into answering and trusting the call. They ran VoIP over broadband, deployed thousands of SIM cards, and used fake identities to hide where the call originated. So the next time you ignore an “International” call because it looks risky, remember: fraudsters aren’t wearing obvious masks anymore. They make foreign scams look local and familiar, lowering your guard. The real defense isn’t just ignoring numbers: It’s awareness + verification + informed caution. - Verify unknown contacts - Think twice before sharing information - Report suspicious calls Because scammers evolve with technology—and so should we.
