Why HNIs are shifting their portfolios to small MFDs 1. No targets: Their advice comes from conviction, research and client requirement and not as per monthly quarterly targets. 2. Fewer clients. More attention. A smaller book means your portfolio isn’t an afterthought between 200 other calls. 3. Zero attrition. No job switches. No “your relationship manager has changed.” The person you trust today will be there in ten years. 4. Skin in the game. Their reputation is their business. When they recommend something, their own credibility is on the line. 5. You’re irreplaceable to them. For a large firm, you’re a ticket size. For an independent MFD, you’re the reason they show up every morning. 6. Overqualified by choice. Many independent MFDs are ex-bankers, CAs, MBAs, CFPs — even CFAs. Shaping India's PMS landscape: Alongside SEBI and industry pioneers Honoured to have shared the stage with industry leaders at the recent PMS Forum in Bengaluru, co-hosted by Bloomberg and the Association of Portfolio Managers in India (APMI). It was exciting to share the stage with Mr. Manoj Kumar, Executive Director of SEBI, and fellow speakers Aashish P Sommaiyaa and Anand Shah. The collaborative exchange with regulators and industry stakeholders reinforced the importance of building a transparent, investor-centric portfolio management ecosystem. The discussions highlighted a pivotal shift in our industry — as investor participation grows and markets become increasingly complex, technology has evolved from being a support function to a strategic driver of success. Specialized Investment Funds (SIFs) are a new category in India, launched in late 2024 and early 2025 to bridge the gap between traditional mutual funds and more flexible, high-net-worth individual (HNI) investment products like PMS and AIFs. As of late 2025, the overall performance data is limited due to their recent introduction, but initial reception has been strong, with several fund houses launching products. Current Status and Initial Response The SIF category has witnessed a promising start: Rapid AUM Growth: In its debut month (October 2025), the SIF category's Asset Under Management (AUM) crossed ₹2,000 crore. Strong Investor Interest: This AUM was spread across more than 10,000 investor folios, indicating significant interest from HNIs and sophisticated investors seeking alternative strategies. Key Funds Launched: The first SIF products included equity long-short and hybrid long-short strategies from fund houses such as Quant Mutual Fund (qSIF), SBI Mutual Fund (Magnum SIF), and Edelweiss Mutual Fund (Altiva SIF).

After a slow start to the year, it is encouraging to see private equity and venture capital investments picking up again. February saw about $2.6 billion invested, taking the total for the first two months of the year to $4.3 billion across 209 deals. One interesting signal in the data is that early-stage companies attracted about $723 million, slightly higher than the $652 million that went to growth-stage companies. The momentum tends to shift like this from time to time, especially after valuation corrections, but it is always good to see early-stage innovation continuing to find capital. Even when markets slow down temporarily, the underlying momentum of entrepreneurship and innovation in India continues to move forward.
