defect from (something)
To leave some place, often under repressive conditions and when it is prohibited. I defected from my homeland after witnessing the atrocities carried out by the government. Alexander Mogilny was the first hockey player to defect from the Soviet Union to play in the NHL. My parents knew we had to defect from our war-torn homeland if we wanted any hope of survival.
