1. Behind one, in or as if in pursuit. I don't know how the suspect managed to get away—the police were at his back for blocks! A: "Is that dog still at our back?" B: "Yeah, run faster!" Once I could hear the police car's sirens at our back, my heart started pounding even harder.
2. In support of one. I'm worried that my thesis topic will get rejected, as I only have my adviser at my back so far. I feel like my parents are the only ones at my back anymore ever since news of the scandal broke. I'm your husband—I'll always be at your back.
