second act

1. Literally, the second of the major divisions in a play, film, or opera. In the second act of the film, the survivors have to band together and figure out a way to repel the alien invasion. The character motivations hinted at in the second act inform the actions they take in the fifth act of the play.
2. A second period or stage of something, especially in which its initial aspects are followed up, expanded, or further developed. The government is rolling out the second act of its new healthcare initiative. This is our one chance to make this plan work. There's no second act.
3. A later stage in one's life characterized by a distinct divergence from the previous stage. I worked in a stuffy banking job for nearly 30 years, never experiencing thrills or adventure. That's why I decided to move to Italy for my second act and pursue my dream of writing spy novels.
