Profi golfozóvá válása nem sikerült, így a zeneipar felé fordult. Pályafutása az 50-es évek végén kezdődött rockabilly felvételekkel. A 60-as években vált igazán ismertté a Jimi Hendrix által játszott „Wild Thing” zeneszerzőjeként.
