Русский belongs to ethnic origin. You can be русский, but live anywhere else in the world. Your ethnic origin always remains русский.
Россиянин belongs to nationality, that is, citizenship. If you are россиянин, it means you are from Russia, you hold a passport of Russia, but your ethnic origin could be anything else.
So, русский is ethnicity. Россиянин is nationality/citizenship.

Russian is the nationality of a person. And Rossiyanin is a person who has Russian citizenship.

@pasare_de_noapte All citizens of Russia are Rossiyane, regardless of their nation, and for the whole world, they are Russians. Just like any citizen of America is considered American. In English, there is no, so to speak, concept of nationality that implies the entire former Union; they have roots, ethnic origins, and the word nationality implies belonging to citizenship. I am a national of Russia means that I am a citizen of Russia. What is your nationality? What is your citizenship? And if you are Kyrgyz by nation, that is, by ethnic and root origin, but a citizen of Russia, then you are Rossiyanin, and for the entire world, Russian. :)

В английском языке нет, можно сказать, понятия как национальность, которую подразумевает весь бывший Союз, у них есть корни, этническое происхождение, и слово nationality подразумевает принадлежность к гражданству. I am a national of Russia означает, что я гражданин России. What is your nationality? Какое ваше гражданство? И если вы киргиз по нации, т.е. по происхождению этническому и корням, но гражданин России, то вы - россиянин, а для всего мира Russian. :)

Русские - это множественное число, например «Почти все русские любят борщ».
А россиянин это единичное число, например « Добропорядочный россиянин»

россиянин звучит очень плохо. многим из русских предпочтительней называть себя русскими, но, как я знаю, закреплено, что граждане РФ - россияне.
русские - это русский народ, а россияне - граждане РФ
