Five Things General George Hammond got used to as Commander of the SGC

It never got any easier when a team didn't return, but George learned, like many moments in his career, to deal with the pain. A team being lost somewhere the Universe or lost in a war zone - it didn't matter - the one thing he knew was important was to never forget them.

Losing Daniel Jackson the first time was hard. Though he'd not tell anyone, he did have a soft spot for the first team of the SGC. SG-1 were like wayward children with Jack in charge and losing Daniel had been difficult, until he showed up alive and well. When it happened a second time, George was happily surprised, the third time he put it down to plain dumb luck. But the more Daniel supposedly died and came back to them, George gave up on the grieving and like everyone else, accepted that with Daniel, it was just one of those things.

When SG1 weren't off world, there was little chance unless you arrived at the commissary early, that there'd be any blue jello or cream cake left for desert after supper. No matter if you were the commanding officer or not.

Alien plant life was only interesting in the first few years, but after that alien fiscus looked like the next alien fiscus no matter how much anthroplogists tried to convince you there was a difference. George wondered if they would ever see through his 'smile and nod' routine every time he was made to sit down and endure their briefings.

Walter Harriman had an uncanny knack for being there at the right moment. At first it had taken George a long time to get used to Harriman just 'being there' with the correct papers/answers/reports/explanation. But after several years, George wondered how he'd ever gotten through a day without Walter on hand. Jack liked to think he was the Second in Command but George secretly pondered on how well the machine of the SGC would run without Harriman at her wheel.

Five things you never knew about Walter Harriman

Walters best friend is Sylvester Siler. It was commonly known they were good friends, but it was never asked when they became friends. Fact is they've known each other since being young cadets in the airforce, a friendship born of mutual respect for one anothers strengths. Walter is fast with technology, Sly is good with his hands. Together they run the SGC under the direction of General Hammond.

Walter doesn't envy the SG teams who go offworld. Sometimes he day-dreams of the adventures they have, but he's seen too many not return. He's heard too many harrowing stories being told over meals in the commissary. He's lost too many friends, watched peoples lives scarred by what they have seen.

Walter Harriman is a Gleek. He never meant to be but growing up with his grandma, he was constantly bombarded with show tunes and though he could do without the teenage drama and angst, the songs make him smile and remind him of his happy childhood. The only person who knows is Siler and now Vala who caught him humming along to an episode when he thought he was alone in the rec room.

He was engaged once, before he joined the SGC. He'd like to say he didn't marry because they grew apart or have some tragic, angsty story of her dying because that would be easier. Eaiser than having to explain to people she ran off with another man exclaiming that when she really sat back and looked at him and their life together, she found it a joke and laughable and really, why would anyone want to be with him when much better men could be found? Siler kept him bevvied up with beers and comforting words and assurances that the bitch really wasn't worth it until he moved on and the pain and heartbreak went away.

Walter Harriman has kissed Vala Mal Doran. It was shameful (he got drunk at the SGC Christmas Party), hot and no he's not in love, but he's hopeful. Because she made the first move and didn't mock him afterwards and yeah okay, it wasn't just one kick kiss on the lips but a full blown make out session in the utility cupboard on level 25. And now she keeps giving him knowing smiles, pinches his butt when she passes by him and calls him 'sexy' when they are alone.
