Welcome to my blog about hurt/comfort and whump!

I focus more on the meta of hurt/comfort and whump - observations and thoughts, as well as articles, memes, and such.

I also reblog posts about fandom, horror, medical info, and such. I will talk about social justice. Also satire, gallows humor, and body horror. Occasional reblogs of a cool animal picture or whatever I think is interesting.

Here’s an intro post (from 2019), where I explain “hurt/comfort” and “whump”.

My About/Index/Tags page has an ongoing list of posts, resources and links. These include: my meta and speculative posts, articles around whump and h/c, surveys, writing resources, papers, fandom, reviews, and misc links.

Notable things include….

Cheers and see you around on the next speculative whumpy post!

Character Emotional Wound Template (Preview →)

We all love an emotionally complex, damaged hero. This template helps you build a layered character backstory, examining family dynamics, formative relationships, and key life events that contribute to your character’s core emotional scar(s)—and explores the impact of those experiences on the character’s actions and relationships today.

It's fun when the robot character in the sci-fi show gets cut in half because nobody working on this type of media knows anything about robotics and you never know what you're going to find inside. Green printed circuit boards? Meat and viscera, but like in a weird colour? Just a shitload of goo?

prokopetz

I especially like it when the robot appears to have realistic musculature which operates via contraction, suggesting some sort of fluid-driven or shape-memory-based actuation, and then it gets dismembered and a bunch of random gears and sprockets go flying everywhere.

prokopetz

You're a sci-fi robot who just got cut in half by the Big Bad (don't worry, you'll get better). What's inside you?

Printed circuit boards (blinking lights optional)

Gears and sprockets

Endless bundles of wire

Some sort of translucent crystal

Meat and viscera in a weird colour

Random geometric shapes

The cut is mirror-smooth, like I was one solid mass of metal

It looks like... car parts?

I'm actually mostly hollow

Just a shitload of milky goo

Other (specify)

Cheese sandwich

sci fi is all about getting so scared and ripping tubes out of yourself. people miss this

grocki

sci fi is all about desperately trying to reclaim your violated bodily autonomy. it’s all about asserting that you are a being with agency, and you can choose what happens to your own person, even if that’s ripping tubes out of yourself. and also sometimes an alien is there

Anonymous asked:

Okay, this might be an annoying question so feel free not to answer, but do you have advice for writing a character who has schizophrenia? It seems like many schizophrenic characters are written poorly, and I was wondering if you have any specific things to do or to avoid.

macgyvermedical answered:

Not annoying at all!

I think schizophrenic characters are written poorly because everyone thinks they know what schizophrenia is, but no one actually does.

What you typically get in fiction is someone hallucinating without knowing they’re hallucinating- in a fight with someone who isn’t there, curled in a ball rocking with their hands pressed over their ears. And if you’re just briefly meeting a side character, that’s probably the fastest way to establish their issues.

But if you have a main (or fleshed-out supporting) character with schizophrenia, you have to know there is a lot more to the disorder to write it well.

Schizophrenia has three types of symptoms: Positive, Negative, and Cognitive.

Positive symptoms include things that aren’t there in a healthy brain, but are in schizophrenia. These are things like hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia.

Negative symptoms include things that are present in a healthy brain, but not present in schizophrenia. These are things like a lack of motivation, decreased ability to feel pleasure, social withdrawal, and poverty of speech.

Cognitive symptoms are changes in thinking. These are things like problems with executive function, impaired working memory, struggling to concentrate, delayed processing, and trouble reading social and emotional cues from others.

Writing Positive Symptoms:

  • Most people with schizophrenia have auditory hallucinations, meaning they hear voices that aren’t there. These can be voices narrating their life, telling them (usually mean) things about themselves, or commanding them to do something. Some people have other types of hallucinations, like visual hallucinations (seeing something that isn’t there) or tactile (feeling something that isn’t there).
  • The person may or may not know that a hallucination is not real. Knowing a hallucination isn’t real doesn’t make it go away.
  • You know when you’re in a dream and everything makes sense, but then you wake up and realize the dream was really bizarre? That’s kind of what delusions are like. You’re so sure a thing you’re thinking makes total sense, but everyone you’re trying to talk about the thing with thinks you’re crazy. And its frustrating because it makes so much sense to you. And no one else seems to get it.
  • Common delusions are things like thinking someone is out to get you, thinking others can read your mind or can put thoughts in your mind, thinking you’re special, or thinking you have something medically devastatingly wrong with you.
  • Medications are really good at treating hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia.

Writing Negative Symptoms:

  • Nothing feels good, or you spend a lot of time trying to feel good and failing (a lot of comorbid substance use disorders in people with schizophrenia)
  • You just can’t think of anything to say that makes sense, or it takes so long to come up with something to say that the moment has passed. So you just… don’t say things.
  • “Flat affect” means your face is kind of blank and doesn’t emote normally. Resting schizophrenia face.
  • You don’t know how to make friends unless you have been specifically trained in the art and technique
  • Catatonia is where you’re conscious but can’t move (or move really weirdly) or communicate. But you’re in there. And it’s terrifying.
  • Sometimes if negative symptoms are primary this can get misdiagnosed as depression or autism
  • There are no medications that treat negative symptoms, but sometimes antidepressants can help.

Writing Cognitive Symptoms:

  • These are honestly some of the hardest symptoms to live with
  • The degree of cognitive symptoms a person has pretty much determines how disabled they are by schizophrenia.
  • Problems with following conversations with more than one person
  • Problems dialing a phone number because you can’t hold the numbers in your head long enough
  • Trouble following verbal directions
  • Confusion. Just not understanding what is going on.
  • Having a “loading” period between a piece of information entering your brain and understanding what was said or read.
  • Difficulty starting tasks and staying on tasks
  • These are some of the first symptoms to present (usually in young teens) and are sometimes misdiagnosed as ADHD, because of the concentration problems
  • There are no medications that can treat cognitive symptoms

Medications and therapy (usually something called CBT-P, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis), are mostly effective for positive symptoms. Because of this, negative and cognitive symptoms are often the more disabling part of the condition. You can modulate your character’s level of disability by expressing more or less of their negative and cognitive symptoms.

Hope this helps!

marithlizard

This is really clear and informative, thank you! I had no idea there was so much overlap with depression and ADHD. Do ADHD stimulant medications tend not to work if the underlying cause is schizophrenia, then?

macgyvermedical

They might work (most people get better focus/executive function from stimulants, regardless of having or not having ADHD), but the problem is that there's a risk that it will make psychosis worse, so they're not often used. If the schizophrenia is well controlled with antipsychotics the risk is lower.

gender-incinerator

Not all auditory hallucinations are voices!!! Sometimes it's other sounds, and can be pretty much anything you could think of. (some of mine include doors opening/doorknob turning/creaky hinges, people knocking on my door or window, animal and nature sounds when there are no animals nearby, just for a few examples)

Additionally, while medication does often help, anti-psychotics commonly can cause some very serious side effects. Common ones include rapid weight gain or loss, severe appetite changes, worsening depression, anxiety or psychosis symptoms (as mentioned above). Looking into some of these medications and their side effects will also help characters with schizophrenia feel realistic (or characters with any other condition that can be treated with medication for that matter).

Medication is a common topic of concern for schizophrenic or otherwise psychotic people, especially given the long and horrific history of asylums, forced institutionalization, and forced medication of psychotic people (obviously this will depend on if the setting is in the real world or an imaginary one). So reading up on specific schizophrenic experiences and anxieties with the medical and psychiatric fields may also be helpful to you depending on the context of what you're making

wanting to see more Black whumpees like me just absolutely getting it like really being shattered to the ground and kicked while they're down then crying their hollow eyes out for my sadistic pleasure vs not wanting to perpetuate the fetishizing glorification of violence towards Black bodies by colonialism&racism 😍

cepheusgalaxy

anyways it is very important to be aware of that kind of stuff bc we live in a racist society and its very easy to perpetuate systemic violence even in the little ways (im not perfect myself and like im somewhat more lighter-skinned than my peers even so i dont feel the hit of racism as roughly as some of them do) BUT for what its worth i think its a very worthwhile line to walk. whump is also about the validation of pain & exploring suffering while humanizing your unlucky main character and Black (+ other nonwhite) characters should get that too. make your nonwhite whumpees cry their eyeballs out and feel hollow in face of the world today #myagenda

cepheusgalaxy

they also deserve tragic backstories + sweet caretakers + the reclamation of bodily autonomy in recovery + identity issues + drowning in the puts of utter despair + generally have the worst time of their lives while an audience sympathizes with them. it shouldnt be just the white boys who get it. hold my hand. let's put our Black characters through such hellish torment that they come out on the other side feeling a tangible gab between who they became vs who they used to be. together.

(still on the same vein, this post by @/creatingblackcharacters is a pretty nice resource to start out i think every now and then i reread it i think it has nice things to keep in mind)

cepheusgalaxy

#i dont talk about my black whumpees a lot because. i like pet whump. and that's incredibly iffy as a pair. but yess #good post opALT

^get peer-reviewed @whumpity-whumpity (on my other post) this is soooo real

it also really hits the nail of what i was thinking ab when i posted this bc like. some very common whump elements like the muzzle and the whip and the pet and the slave etc, which are all cool and lovely when you don't have to take the matter of race into the equation, suddenly become very heavy with centuries worth of context and that's why it feels like we are more limited when navigating black whumpees for example... which is why i think that my point still stands! i'm a big pet whump fan & i am black and i would love to see more black pet whumpees & there are a lot of similar cases out there. even if it's difficult to navigate and somewhat tricky people deserve to be represented in their favorite whump sub-genres too. similar thing with lady whump (+ other "minority whump"). HOWEVER, as i said in my tags somewhere lately there's been a really strong push for more lady whump when before most of what you could find was a lot of men & boys over and over!!! which i think is amazing. i think we can also diversify our whump main characters in many other ways and i really like the direction us as a community are heading towards. black whumpees are 100% worth exploring and i hope we can do that more often in the future :)

we got any good whumpy art/gifs of Gosling’s character in Project Hail Mary? Specifically the part where Grace’s face is smushed up against the spaceship wall, one eye open, and Grace is trying to stop the spinning and save him and Rocky but our human is passing out. Open to other visuals too.

I know I can try and find stuff through the tumblr search function (maybe) - but also, I am curious what a crowd-sourcing query to the whump sphere might do.
