Notes: ~ Thoughts ~

He didn't believe in psychics. Or premonitions. Only the hard evidence of the world before him.

Which was why the odd feeling of foreboding that he couldn't seem to shake was starting to wear on him. Zechs scowled. It felt as though there were some timer ticking down in the back of his subconscious.

He knew it wasn't nerves. Battling Heero Yuy desensitised a man to such trivial things as nerves. And yet...

Something told him that he would miss an opportunity if he didn't act soon. What he was supposed to do, though, was unclear. His subconscious refused to tell him.

Ever since he'd joined Preventers, Zechs had been growing more and more restless. It was such a relief to be back in action. To have clear-cut objectives, and to be able to lose himself in the rush of battle once again. It was a bit odd being on the same side as the Gundam pilots, this time, but it didn't bother him as much as he had initially expected it to. Maintaining the peace was more important than such petty concerns.

No, what concerned him, now that the battle was over and the mop-up had begun, was what to do next.

Sitting back in his pilot's seat and keeping a wary eye on the proceedings on his screens, Zechs let his thoughts drift slightly, hoping they would work themselves out.

~ I suppose, I could join Preventers more permanently... No, that would never work. The paperwork would drive me insane. And I have a suspicion that anyone else Une recruited would hate me. ~

The problem with peace was that, once the warriors who had paid so dearly for it had succeeded, they were no longer needed.

A sardonic smile twisted his handsome features. ~ If I'm any judge, that's probably what drove Chang to the lengths he went to, to find meaning in his life. I wonder if he found it. ~

~ For that matter, Treize was much the same way. Stubborn, tenacious, and brilliant. The universe truly lost one of its brightest stars that day. ~

Shaking his head, Zechs gave in. This was getting him strictly nowhere. And that in and of itself was getting frustrating.

A beep from his comm distracted him.

"Noin."

"Zechs, aren't you going to come stow that suit properly?"

"Yes, I suppose I should. I take it we've been cut loose?"

"The situation's under control here. We're to get our suits in the appropriate hangars and report to Une for a debrief in the morning."

"Very well."

~ Perhaps it is time to return to the grave I had picked out for myself after the first war. Our objectives have been accomplished. There is no room for a warrior in a peaceful world. ~

"Zechs?"

He realised with a start that he'd let his thoughts drift without ending the call to Noin. "Yes?"

"What are you thinking about so hard?"

"Noin, this world needs to have a chance to move past the wars that have all but ripped it apart."

"What are you trying to say?"

"I am officially dead, and if I were to return it would plunge the political world into chaos."

"So what will you do," she asked calmly.

"Disappear." A sad smile appeared. "For good."

To his surprise, Noin smiled. "I don't intend to let you escape me that easily again. Perhaps you'll listen to a proposition?"

"I'm listening."
