Wide range of options.

I'm going to be buying a high-end tube amp, and I've been looking at the Marshall TSL100 and Mesa Nomad 100 heads. Are there any simliarly powered tube amp heads out there that I should try before choosing one of these fine pieces of equipment?

amps and effects and other such things...

Ok amps, Yea well i use this lil crate gx-15 or something. I never have plugged into a bigger better high quality amp to actually critic it. I don't know anything about tone. All i do is make my amp sound cool. But I finally got a job and after i save up im lookin to by myself a good amp. But i can't do that because I have no idea what im looking for or doing. Are there any sites out there that like explain what you should look for and why? Also for pedals everyone seems to make a big deal out of them, all I do is just play and thats what it sounds like i use effects to minimum is that bad? Everything is just so confusing all I do is play guitar I dont know any of the technical stuff.

I haven't shaved in three weeks, to keep a superstition going that the longer my facial hair is the better my guitar skills will stay. Anyone else have odd superstitions about any aspect of guitars?

Check out this tuning. I really like it. Whenever I pick up my guitar with this tuning I come up with something really cool. From low to high it's C G D A A (unison) E. Mess around with it and let me know what you all think. It was "designed" for acoustic but I'm sure it would sound good on electric too.

So, I'm trying to do an assessment of the value of my gear. What would you estimate the selling value of a 1993 Black Gibson SG Special with minor cosmetic flaws (scratches, scuffs) with a nice hardshell flight case?

preamp valves in classic 30 for jazz

Hi guys, I'm pretty strictly a jazz player these days. I've had my Peavey classic 30 for years. i want to change the valves to get a better sound for jazz. I'm pretty dumb in this area although i do know how to change them myself. I'm running an archtop with a resonably high output pickup (the only one i could find that fit). I'm after a jim hall/wes montgomery esque tone, warm but not just all bass (i don't want to roll my tone control completely off lol) there is more to my setup but mainly the preamp valves are all i'm keen on changing. i can't afford to change amps and i'm not willing to go solid state.

edit: forgot to mention, i have 2x 12AX7 and 1x 12AT7 in the preamp and 4x EL84 in the poweramp atm, are there any tone differences in the brand of tube?

Two much needed items I finally purchased.

I just posted this on my blog. For years I stupidly put up with trying to play from sheet music without these two items. Don't be like me:

I bought a music notes stand like the kind you see symphonic bands use via Amazon. For the longest time I put up with laying sheet music on the bed or on other flat spaces before me, which is very awkward to do.

The only problem is that it apparently comes in two packages. When I opened the first package, I tried to put the three pieces together before I looked at the invoice where it said in small print that this item may come in two shipments. I was thinking, 'There's no way that tis can fit together! Where are all the other parts?!' Thank God I didn't harm it by obsessively-compulsively trying to fit these pieces together.

I also bought some clear plastic clips from another website that fits onto these music stands to hold music books open. Another annoyance I put up with for years were these perfect bound music books that are very difficult to keep open. It used to be that music books were spiral bound, but book sellers hate these since you can't display the spines with the title on them to customers. I thought I was going to have to take my music books to a printer and have the spine cut off and have them put the spirals into them so I could keep them open without having to put weights on the edges of the pages from under which they always slip out from under! Argh!
Buddy Holly

Another guitar-related purchase.

I bought this egg-shaped gell hand exerciser via Amazon. I remembered Kirk Hammett of Metallica and Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult both saying years ago in their own respective columns in guitar magazines that they found hand exercisers very helpful to keeping up their hand strength, which is essential to being able to physically play the guitar which is not necessarily that easy to do, well, from a physical perspective.  I've noticed that the  stronger my hands are  the easier it is for me to play.

I thought briefly about getting a hand exerciser with the springs and hard plastic grips for each finger. However, I read that the new ones were uncomfortable to use. I know from my own experience that the hand grip I used to have that came with a weight lifting set was uncomfortable to use. So when I saw these ones made of gell and egg shaped, I kenw this was probably the one for me. I've been using it for the last few minutes and it's very comfortable to use and I think it'll make my hand stronger, so it looks like it was a good decision to buy it. I bought the blue/medium version, by the way.
