pseudodeity: and the bassist from APC
starlet_bright: ...basically, girls make the best bass players?
pseudodeity: *giggles* basically, yeah

In case no-one's guessed, pseudodeity is a guy (*off topic alert* and fiance) and so cannot join girlcrushes but he did bring up the girl spookyness that is the Female Bass Player. Kim Gordon, possibly the only girlcrush I have on all levels came from barely knowing a chord to being an incredibl;y powerful force in music. Kim Deal struck off from The Pixies and ended up leaving them in the shadow of her band, The Breeders...female bass players are obviously not in music for novelty value or eyecandy yet...

It makes me wonder about grrlmusic in general. Women in music are expected to conform to their genre in terms of appearence - we know Britney is pop from how she dresses and how she is marketed...but what is it exactly that worries and disturbs me about girls who crush on her? Who aspire to be her? Perhaps I'm being a complete indie elitest, but I also feel angry when friends of mine put down bass players or girl music saying it's somehow inferior, that playing bass doesn't require skill. Even Pink falls into the trap of being a marketed anti-Britney. Ultimately, is female music really better off competing in the same arena as male orientated music? It feels ignorant to say appearence doesn't play a bigger part in the evaluation and production of female music. Where I live...female music beyond the established Bjork, Britney, Christina and Pink is strictly underground, I feel the best I can do to promote the musical girls I crush on is to share their music and what they have to say...it just frustrates me that people are unreceptive and the best excuse they can often manage is: oh, I don't do girl music. Even fellow girls have been known to violently cringe when The Dresden Dolls or Cat Power is played. It makes me appreciate them even more...I mean, if the audience to win over contains people like these, then they're taking on a tough task.

Call this a random girlcrush on any girl who picks up an instrument or uses her voice to make herself heard. I love female music for how I can relate to it, for how it expresses the way I feel, for even tiny things like how a song sung by a women will fit so much better what I want to say on a mixtape.

Annnnd...venting over. *blushes*
