Greater Greater Washington trains and endorses candidates running for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner seats, the District of Columbia’s most local elected office. To find what commission and single-member district you live in, use the District’s tool or OpenANC.

We encourage write-in candidates, particularly in races in which no candidates sought ballot access; candidates running write-in campaigns should be sure to complete our questionnaire so we can consider them in subsequent endorsements; all questionnaire responses can be found here. All available information on our 2024 endorsements can be found here. The elections committee (members listed here) is solely responsible for GGWash’s endorsement decisions.

Because responding to our questionnaire is a prerequisite to earn GGWash’s endorsement, we are only endorsing candidates in the following races.

8A01: Renee Moore

Questionnaire, website, donate

Contested race? Yes, versus Tom Donahue.
Seat currently held by: Tonya Crawford
Previously endorsed by GGWash? No, Moore is a new-to-us candidate.

Moore grew up in the single-member district that she’s running to serve, and bikes regularly to work and for errands—she’s written a transit diary for us about doing so. Both of these qualities will, we think, be tremendously useful to her as a commissioner seeking to help the “mostly older African Americans who don’t feel heard or seen” in ANC 8A “age in place in a city they love.”

8A06: Scott Thach

Questionnaire, donate

Contested race? Yes, versus Robin McKinney.
Seat currently held by: Robin McKinney
Previously endorsed by GGWash? No, Thach is a new-to-us candidate.

“I love my neighbors and my neighborhood. This is my eighth year here and it’s the friendliest place I’ve ever lived,” says Thach of Anacostia. We appreciate his heartfelt responses to our questionnaire, and believe that his desire to respect and enhance Anacostia as it develops further will serve him and his neighbors well amid inevitable negotiations of change.

8B01: Takema Keyes

Questionnaire, Twitter/X

Contested race? No.
Seat currently held by: Khadija Watson
Previously endorsed by GGWash? Yes, in 2022.

We’re glad to see Keyes run again for the 8B01 seat. While her views on housing production largely diverge from ours, she would encourage a developer to maximize the height and density of a discretionary project. We find it worthwhile that she articulated the link between being able to swap a trip by car to a trip on foot because of new retail options opening nearby.

8B04: Kimberly Little

Questionnaire

Contested race? No.
Seat currently held by: Kimberly Little
Previously endorsed by GGWash? No, Little is a new-to-us candidate.

Little has a preference for historic districts and preserving the character of existing neighborhoods, but she does agree that it should be legal to build apartments District-wide and would encourage a developer to maximize the height and density of a discretionary project.

8C06: Robbie Woodland

Questionnaire, Twitter/X

Contested race? No.
Seat currently held by:
Previously endorsed by GGWash? No, Woodland is a new-to-us candidate.

AI checkers aren’t reliable enough that we feel comfortable running candidates’ statements through them; that said, we would be remiss if we didn’t note that Woodland’s written questionnaire responses strike us as having a whiff of ChatGPT. However, we’re endorsing Woodland on the basis of her support of legalizing apartments District-wide, and hope that she and her daughter find an opportunity to walk to the park together.

8C08: Elizabeth Carter

Questionnaire, Twitter/X

Contested race? Yes, versus Rene Neal.
Seat currently held by: Amanda Beale
Previously endorsed by GGWash? No, Carter is a new-to-us candidate.

Carter, who wrote in response to our questionnaire, “There is an urgent need of density in Ward 8C08,” is not, disappointingly, in support of legalizing apartments District-wide. She would, however, encourage a developer to maximize the height and density of a discretionary project and identified “creating opportunities for new housing in my commission’s area” as her priority in a Comprehensive Plan rewrite.

8D01: Dionne Yvette Brown

Questionnaire

Contested race? No.
Seat currently held by: Jacqueline Kinlow
Previously endorsed by GGWash? No, Brown is a new-to-us candidate.

Brown’s experience in civic matters is on display in her detailed responses to our questionnaire, which also contains support for legalizing apartments District-wide, a balanced approach to historic preservation, and fewer trips by car.

8D06: Wendy Hamilton

Questionnaire, Twitter/X

Contested race? Yes, versus Patrice Lancaster.
Seat currently held by: Wendy Hamilton
Previously endorsed by GGWash? Yes, in 2022.

We’re big fans of Rev. Wendy Hamilton, who’s largely aligned with our views, and whose commitment to improving her neighbors’ quality of life shines in her responses to our questionnaire. As in 2022, we’re pleased to endorse her for her knowledge of how to make an impact on decisionmakers, and compassion for where she lives.

8E01: Robin R. Scott

Questionnaire, donate

Contested race? Yes, versus Deborah Wells.
Seat currently held by: Deborah Wells
Previously endorsed by GGWash? No, Scott is a new-to-us candidate.

Some of Scott’s questionnaire responses come off as ChatGPT-inflected, but do indicate that she would encourage a developer to maximize the height and density of a discretionary project, prioritize “creating opportunities for new housing in my commission’s area” as in a Comprehensive Plan rewrite, and support fewer trips by car.

6/8F01: Nic Wilson

Questionnaire

Contested race? No.
Seat currently held by: Nic Wilson
Previously endorsed by GGWash? Yes, in 2022.

We empower Wilson to carry out his dreams of more rigorous parking enforcement in Navy Yard, a neighborhood that people should really only be driving to and from sparingly. As in 2022, we’re pleased to see Wilson on the same page with us with regard to housing-production policies.

6/8F02: Antonio Rossi

Questionnaire, Twitter/X, donate

Contested race? Yes (versus Markita Bryant and Elissa De Souza)
Seat currently held by: Rick Murphree
Previously endorsed by GGWash? No, Rossi is a new-to-us candidate.

Rossi’s a stand-up candidate; his responses to our questionnaire, such as, “I am committed to understanding the concerns of my constituents and working diligently with local government agencies and private entities to address them” read not as platitudes but as a sincere commitment to his neighbors. We look forward to seeing what he can do with his fellow commissioners, particularly around parking policy.

6/8F03: Brian Strege

Questionnaire, Twitter/X

Contested race? No.
Seat currently held by: Brian Strege
Previously endorsed by GGWash? Yes, in 2022.

Strege is a hard worker, super-smart, and obviously passionate about where he lives. We are just as excited to endorse him as we were in 2022, especially given his excellent response to our question about representative democracy: “I do not believe that the goal of upholding the District of Columbia’s interests is necessarily in conflict with the goal of upholding the interests of my ANC, and I believe that I will (and do) act to make decisions that are beneficial to both. Every neighborhood is different, but using Navy Yard as an example, we are not only a community of 10,000 residents but we’re also a ‘destination neighborhood’ that is frequently visited by other residents of DC, as well as Maryland and Virginia. I would like to see fewer parking spaces on our roads, both because I believe we need to make room for additional PUDO zones, but also because I’d like to see fewer trips made into Navy Yard by car.”

We appreciate that Patrice Lancaster (8D06), Markita Bryant (6/8F02), and Elissa De Souza (6/8F02) responded to our questionnaire, but are not endorsing them because we do not feel that their views are sufficiently compatible with ours.
