Reminder: Grace Hopper Celebration scholarship applications due May 31

Edit: The deadline has been extended to May 31st.

Just a quick reminder for the students here: scholarship applications to attend the 2011 Grace Hopper Celebration are due May 31st, so you’ve got a bit less than a week to get them done! Scholarships can cover conference registration, hotel and travel.

The Celebration is being held on November 9-12, 2011 in Portland, Oregon. It is a totally awesome conference filled with amazing technical women, and I highly recommend it all women in technical fields. (Men are also welcome to attend, and I’ve heard many positive things about the experience from them as well!)

For the scholarship, don’t forget that you’ll need a letter of support from a faculty member, so make sure you go out and ask for that now so they have time to write it before the deadline! You’ll also need an updated resume and a 500 word essay, so the sooner you start the better.

My friend Leslie recently gave a presentation on the scholarship application process that I’m embedding below so you know what to expect:

Good luck! Conference registration for non-students opens June 1st.

Reminder: Grace Hopper Celebration call for participation ends on March 15th

Grace Hopper 2011 Conference Poster ArtQuick reminder: The Call for Participation for the 2011 Grace Hopper Celebration closes one week from today, on March 15th.

For those who don’t know, the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is an amazing conference filled with fascinating technical women. It’s a great environment in which to present, so if there’s something you’d like to share with technical women, I highly recommend you consider submitting a talk! The theme is “What if…?” but they accept a wide variety of talks even if they are not directly related to the theme.

This is for the conference in Portland, Oregon (USA) on November 9-12, 2011. If giving talks isn’t your thing, general registration for the conference opens on June 1, 2011. Scholarship applications are open if you’re a student who needs assistance getting to the conference or if you’re on the other side of the spectrum, consider sponsoring (or getting your company to sponsor) to help make it more affordable for others!

July 6th is the last day for super early bird rate for Grace Hopper Celebration

Just a quick reminder: July 6th is the last day for the super early bird rate for the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing.

If you haven’t heard of GHC before, it’s a really amazing conference for women involved in technology (especially geek feminists!). Not only does it tip the usual ratios on their heads (hello, >90% women! And yes, that means men are welcome.) it’s one of very few conferences where I can say that even the most technical talks are interesting and well-presented (no boring grad students reading from slides in a monotone here!) There’s also job hunting opportunities, career advice, talks about work-life balance, impostor syndrome, and this year, I’m going to be taking part in a new track on open source, along with Leslie Hawthorn (whose guest post you might remember) and many other excellent folk.

I’ve met some amazing friends through this conference, women who continue to inspire me, and I highly recommend it to all of you.
