New Apple displays, M5 MacBook upgrades expected by Q1 2026

While the world deals with the launch of the iPhone 17 generation, Apple still has other products that could arrive before the end of 2025 or in early 2026, including a new wave of M5 Macs and possible screens.

The dust has started to settle on the annual September launches of new iPhone models, which this year included the iPhone Air and Apple Watch updates. However, this is only part of Apple's overall product catalog, and it tends to release many products late in the year.

According to the Bloomberg "Power On" newsletter on Sunday, the next batch of releases should consist of multiple Mac launches. That should be alongside changes to the iPad Pro and Vision Pro lineup, writes Mark Gurman.

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro

According to Gurman, Apple is preparing for its refresh of its Mac lineup for M5, its inbound new Apple Silicon chip. Mass production of new models is fast approaching, with all expected to arrive between the end of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.

This includes a new pair of MacBook Pro models, codenamed J714 and J716. While the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro are not expected to get a redesign, the new chip should give it a bit of a performance bump.

This is a partial revision of a timeline from Gurman, who previously said in July that the M5 MacBook Pro lineup is expected in the first half of 2026, not 2025.

Expect bigger changes like an OLED screen in the future M6 version.

As well as the MacBook Pro, a pair of MacBook Air refreshes is also anticipated for launch, codenamed J813 and J815. However, that too has been speculated to be launching in either 2025 or early 2026 too, and with no material changes expected other than the chip change.

Screens

Accompanying the two MacBook variants will also be a pair of Mac monitors, codenamed J427 and J527. Again, these are lumped in with the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro as entering mass production soon, according to one of Gurman's sources.

Gurman doesn't say what these will be directly in the piece, aside from the codenames, but there have been rumors about them in the past.

One, the J427, is anticipated to be a next-generation Studio Display, though it is not exactly clear what will change. Some rumors have pointed to a change from LED backlighting to MiniLED, short of a full OLED change.

The current 5K resolution could potentially be increased to a 6K or 7K version, while the screen size could be altered from 27 inches to a possible 32 inches. ProMotion and Thunderbolt 5 support have also been mooted.

However, the rumor mill hasn't been that clear about Apple monitor rumors. It is possible that some of the claims relate to the second J527 model, possibly as a larger-sized counterpart to the main Studio Display itself.

The Studio Display really should be 32” and 6k by this point.

I actually like the current 5k version. But after having pretty much the same screen back in 2015, I just can’t justify buying it.

    A 32”  6k would be great.

Prefer an iMac with those specs, but if that isn’t here in a year, this will do.

I have two of the current 27” 5k Studio Displays and they are by far the best displays i have ever owned. Incredibly good and no eye strain despite long hours of use.

32“ would be good but i would likely not be a customer as 2x 27” is better than 1x 32” for me. Ideally they could reduce the current 27” in price and make a 30” version under the 32” high end display.

The high end may benefit from growing to 38” and if it does then i may reconsider and getting it.

LG launched the "32 inch UltraFine Evo 6K" display on CES in January. The first ever 6K Thunderbolt 5 display. It even got the Reddot Design award and is far better looking than the previous generation.  But since then... nothing until this week when LG announced that it will ship on October 10th!

Would be nice if Apple included a camera but 6K, 32", and Thunderbolt 5 is a real upgrade. I do hope we will see reviews of the LG display.

Unless the current Studio Display goes on sale for $600, I'm not getting another 27" display. My current display is 27". I don't need two displays, but I do have a 24" display in portrait mode for my browsers and occasionally running a slideshow app.

I've thought about a 4K TV as a monitor not finding a 4K 32" monitor I like. But that's even harder to find in a TV. There are a couple 4K 32" TVs that might work. I don't need a super ultra-sharp display but I like a reasonably good one.

Maybe Apple will unveil a new display. They probably don't want to cannibalize either display but someone once said better you than the competition. Unless they drop the Studio Display and replace it with another 27". So I want to see how they thread that needle. I don't see them making a cheaper 32" display. Place yer bets, ladies and gentlemen.

The 24" iMac is too small of a display. The Studio Display is too expensive so I want a reasonably priced 27" display (just take my old iMac, gut it and replace it with the proper display board) so I can get a Mac mini. Sure, I could buy a non-Apple display but they don't have everything the Apple display has.

That's a long wait to see if Apple will get competitive with the new Asus ProArt. Can't beat that pricing atm for a great 32" 6K screen.

Hopefully they will fix the camera in the Studio Display.

Love the screen on my Studio Display. What I’d like to see if an improved camera. They went with wide angle and pan & scan, but I don’t need that for work calls, I want higher resolution.

Holding my breath for Curved 40”-50” 8K display. Sure M5 MacBooks will support 8K (and external GPU) through Thunderbolt.
