We endeavour to avoid the old, romantic idea of a gusher, which wastes oil and gas. We want it to stay down the hole until we can lead it off in a controlled manner.

I looked up my dictionary and found that gusher means a kind of oil well or flowing well, but it has been translated into "a method leading to oil spout" in my reference book.
I am sorry for my poor expression, and I really hope that you can get what I mean. Thanks in advance.

  • I think that gusher would be the classic or cliché image of an oil derrick or rig that has the oil spouting from the ground like a giant fountain: that's not what the people drilling want because all the oil and gas are lost. Instead, they want to be able to pump it out in a controlled manner so that it can all be properly stored and processed.

    Thank you very much. :)
