Several years ago, the country eliminated its deteriorating currency, the Surinamese guilder, knocking off three zeros and replacing it with the
Surinamese dollar, currently worth 2.75 to the U.S.
1, 2004 introduced the
Surinamese dollar to simplify calculations, converge an elaborate system of exchange rates and replace the devalued guilder, the colonial currency.
"The government thinks it is the right time to join the Caribbean by changing over from the Surinamese guilder to the
Surinamese dollar," President Ronald Venetiaan said.
In a bid to offer some relief, the government is providing a subsidy of 6 million
Surinamese dollars (US$2.2 million), said Minister Kermechend Raghoebarsing of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (LVV).
In February 2006 the embassy delivered equipment worth approximately $30,000 (84,000
Surinamese dollars) to support a project to preserve Moravian church archives.
