Wystan is a minor antagonist in Final Fantasy Tactics. He is the leader of a gang of thieves who ambush Orran Durai in the mining town of Gollund

In the original and War of the Lions versions, the Gollund orator has a randomized name but retains the unique portrait. The name Wystan was made permanent in The Ivalice Chronicles.

    History

Shortly before Ramza Beoulve's arrival in Gollund during chapter 3, "The Valiant", Orran Durai accidentally came across the hideout of a band of local thieves. He attempted to escape but found himself trapped on the roof, and Wystan confronted him, warning him about sticking his nose in their headquarters. Orran sarcastically replied that they ought to put a sign up to let people know that this was a burglar's den. Wystan complemented him on his gall, but just then Ramza's company appeared.

Ramza, seeing the situation, noted that something seemed amiss. Annoyed, Wystan lamented the number of visitors appearing at their den before ordering the thieves to attack. Wystan and his cronies were unable to kill Orran before Ramza's party defeated them.

    Recruitment

Wystan can be recruited into Ramza's company if he is convinced to via an orator, but this is no different than recruiting other generic units. He has no unique abilities beyond being orator by default, and will lose his unique portrait when recruited. If one does not recruit this Wystan to the company, other units may bear the name randomly after.

Conversing with Wystan in The Ivalice Chronicles has him offer advice about using cloaks and shields in combat to increase your defense. In the original and War of the Lions versions, male units with the name "Wystan" comment also comment on how wearing cloaks make them feel mysterious.

    Gameplay

With a cloak on your back and a shield in your hand, you can shrug off even the fiercest of strikes. Well, sometimes...Wystan

Though technically a named character, Wystan has no native abilities beyond that of any other generic unit, including those recruited from the Warriors' Guild. He may be sent on errands along with other generic units. He will have the orator job during the Gollund fight with randomized stats and equipment.

    Etymology

Wystan means "battle stone", composed of the Old English word wig meaning "battle" and stan meaning "stone"..
