Scalebeast is an enemy in Final Fantasy XIII.
Stats
Carapace intact
Carapace broken
Battle
Scalebeast attacks by biting three to five times, dealing 182-200 damage, then uses Shocking Breath which deals two lightning-elemental hits of 198-245 damage in front of it and ignores magical resistance. When staggered, its carapace breaks, halving its damage output and reducing its elemental and status resistances. When the stagger ends, it uses Regenerate Carapace to recover its original stats.
Strategy
The party should start in Slash & Burn (RAV/COM) paradigm to stabilize the chain gauge, then shift to Dualcasting (RAV/RAV). Synergist should be used to bestow Faith on the party before Scalebeast is staggered. After staggering, Undermine (SAB/RAV) should be used to inflict Deprotect, Deshell and Poison while raising its chain gauge. Once the status ailments are inflicted, the party can shift to Dualcasting to keep raising its chain gauge. Slash & Burn should be used when the gauge is over 400%.
The party's HP should be kept above 500 to survive Shocking Breath. A Spark Ring can be equipped to reduce the damage taken from it.
Lone Scalebeast is slow moving, so it is easy to initiate a preemptive strike against it, but defeating it is time-consuming regardless and likely not worth the drops. Its CP is only equal to five Flandragoras.
Behind the scenes
Scalebeast was originally not supposed to lose its carapace when staggered in the Xbox 360 version; it occurred due to a glitch in the game. After struggling to fix it, Yuji Abe decided to keep it.
