Folios are an ability and character development system in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. They are grids of interconnected nodes, named skill cores, and used to unlock passive and active abilities for them. Folios are unlocked at Maghnata Books shops and vending machines.

Each party member has a folio with a unique set of skill cores to be unlocked. Skill cores are unlocked using SP, which is earned from leveling up, or obtaining manuscripts. A skill core typically provides stat boosts and passive abilities. They can also provide active abilities, synergy abilities, synergy skills, extra character abilities, and even the level 3 limit break of the party member.

The folio system somewhat elaborates on the weapon passives earned in Final Fantasy VII Remake, which also used SP. However, in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, weapons have more limited weapon skills, and SP gained still levels up a weapon, but grants stat boosts to the weapon across the board. Therefore, most abilities unlocked in folios apply regardless of the weapon equipped.

Overview

Each party member has their own folio, with a number of skill cores that they can unlock. The skill cores come in three types signaled by color:

• Stat Boost: Blue skill cores, which either provide a basic boost to the party member's stats, or a passive ability.
• Synergy Ability/Synergy Skill: Red skill cores, which unlocks a new synergy ability or synergy skill with them and another party member. The synergy ability cores are usually larger.
• Ability: Purple skill cores, which grant a new ability to use from the Abilities menu (similar to a weapon ability). One such core grants their level 3 limit break.

The skill cores are unlocked by expending SP. More skill cores become available as the party level advances.

Earning SP

SP is earned in a variety of ways. The most basic way to earn SP is through leveling up, which will gain that party member 5 SP. The remaining SP available are earned by finding manuscripts.

Manuscripts are earned typically in Odd Jobs, or bought in moogle emporiums. More manuscripts are obtained upon defeating bosses when replaying the game in hard mode, meaning completing the game in hard mode is a requirement to fully unlock all cores in a party member's folio.

Improving party level

The party level is improved by gaining Party EXP, which is separate from each party member's individual EXP. Party EXP is earned naturally by completing chapters throughout the main scenario, but earned in abundance through completing World Intel and Odd Jobs. Minigames, including hard mode minigames, also provide a source of party EXP when the other options are exhausted.
