The Augment ability system (デカントアビリティシステム, Dekanto Abiriti Shisutemu?, lit. Decant Ability System) is the support ability system for the 3D versions of Final Fantasy IV.
Mechanics
Augments allow characters to inherit and equip abilities from other characters. While some have several effects, such as Counter, others add new commands, including Bardsong or Twincast.
A character can have as many augments as the player wants, but they can only equip four augments at once in the main command list, since Items cannot be removed. A fifth ability can be attached to the Auto-Battle command, but it will not impact the character's stats and the player must activate Auto-Battle to use it.
It is important to combine augments that have synergy with each other on the same character, such as Draw Attacks with Counter in order to get multiple counterattacks while protecting fragile party members, and Item Lore with Salve/Auto-Potion to enhance items, which also helps with the HP cost of Darkness (or use it with Reach to have more defense in the back row while attacking with the same power as the front row). Edge can also use Throw while hiding.
An augment is received as a key item and is used from the inventory to impart it to a character, and cannot be used again. If the player imparts one or more augments on a guest character, they will meet the requirements to obtain other augments. For example, if the player gives Edward an augment, he will give them Salve, in addition to just Bardsong.
It is impossible to receive all augments in one playthrough, as there are not enough to share early in the game. Because of the limited number of augments that can be obtained up until Cecil's fight with Cagnazzo, the player cannot give Edward two augments and have enough left over to give three to Palom and Porom. Thus, the player must give up either the Hide or Dualcast augment. During subsequent playthroughs with New Game+, this is not a problem as the player will retain their augments. Some augments, such as Treasure Hunter, cannot be obtained more than once.

Stat bonuses
Every ability grants stat bonuses at level up from level 71 on up. It is not enough to just give the Augments to the characters; these Augments must be equipped in battle for the stats to be added once the characters level up. Placing these Augments or Commands in the Auto-Battle slot will not grant the stat bonuses.
