Ferocious beasts with regal, fluttering manes and roars violent enough to shake the earth itself. After rending foes with long claws and horns, they usually use their sharp teeth to deal the killing blow. Also known to use high-level magic, Behemoths are enemies of the top rank.Dissidia Final Fantasy description

The behemoth (ベヒーモス, behīmosu?), also known as the feral behemoth, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series. It debuted as a boss in Final Fantasy II, though there is concept artwork of it for the original Final Fantasy.

Behemoths are large, purple, canine-esque creatures with two bull-like horns and flowing manes. Depending on the game, behemoths may be quadrupedal or bipedal—when bipedal, they are sometimes capable of wielding weapons. They typically appear as late-game enemies or bosses. Due to their great power, behemoths usually attack alone, but occasionally attack in small groups of two or three. Behemoths use strong physical attacks and often counter attacks with an attack of their own. If the player casts magic on them, the behemoth will retaliate with a powerful spell, such as Flare, Maelstrom, or Meteor. They are known to use a similar spell as a final attack. Due to their great strength and high HP, behemoths are among the strongest enemies encountered in most games.

    Behind the scenes

    Amano Behemoth vs. Light Warrior
Unused concept artwork for the original Final Fantasy.

Concept art depicting a winged behemoth facing a Warrior of Light was created for the original Final Fantasy, the piece having been used extensively in promotional material, but the creature itself is not in the game. Concept art of the behemoth for Final Fantasy XI likewise features wings that do not appear in-game. While winged behemoths do not appear in these games, they have appeared in other entries, most notably the behemoth king from Final Fantasy XV and Behemoth K from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. The Final Fantasy VIII and XVI Behemoths also feature what appear to be vestigial wings.

    Etymology

Behemoth is a beast mentioned in the biblical Book of Job 40:15–24. In addition to mythological creatures, it is likened to dinosaurs, especially sauropods, as well as elephants, hippos, rhinos, and bison. Metaphorically, the term behemoth denotes "an extremely large or powerful entity".
