The Hatter, often referred to as the Mad Hatter in audience discussions, is a fictional character originating in Lewis Carroll's 1865 book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its 1871 sequel Through the Looking-Glass. Versions of this character also appear in media adapted from, or inspired by, the original stories.
He is never referred to as the Mad Hatter in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and is known by Hatta in Through The Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll
Canon background
The Hatter first appears in the 1865 novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in the chapter A Mad Tea-Party. Alice is exploring wonderland and meets the Hatter having tea with the March Hare and The Doormouse. He tells a story about having time on his side, but that they have now argued and as a result are always having tea. This is because he sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star for the Queen of Hearts but she sentenced him to death for murdering the time. Time therefore will not do anything for the Hatter and keeps him trapped at 6pm (tea time).
In Through The Looking Glass he appears as "Hatta" - on trial although he was not necessarily guilty. The Queen explains that sometimes subjects are punsihed before they commit a crime and sometimes having not committed one at all. He is mentioned to be a messenger for the White King along with the March Mare.
