Web Graphics, also sometimes called Fan Graphics or just Graphics, are a wide overarching category of fan art that primarily involves editing existing images rather than creating entirely new ones, using photo editing software such as Photoshop. They were especially popular in the 2000s and 2010s.

Usage

These pieces can stand on their own as a piece of fanart, be used to decorate one's site/blog, or they can be connected to other fanworks, like fanfic or fanmixes, either as promotion for the fanwork or as a gift to the creator.

Early web graphics can been seen on personal fansites and archives, on places like GeoCities and Angelfire, because of bandwidth limitations at the time they tended to be small or of low resolution. Later web graphics became popular on sites like LiveJournal, usually through embedding images on image hosting sites, and then on image heavy sites that required no outside hosting like Tumblr. Although, you can also find them shared by fans on social media sites like Twitter and Blue Sky, but image size restrictions and formatting issues on such sites can dissuade some creators from sharing their creations on there.

There are many types of web graphics, many of which fit within their own sub-categories like collage, banners, moodboards, etc, but others are a little more nebulous and don't fit neatly into one sub-category.
