Volunteer duties
Participating groups agree to remove litter from assigned sections of street rights-of-way at least three times a year, over a one year period. In acknowledgement of each group's commitment, Everett personnel install signs identifying the adopting group and provide necessary equipment and training. Participants must be at least 18 years old.
How to volunteer

Brush and grass cutting
Brush and grass cutting and trimming is the responsibility of the abutting property owners. If owners fail to maintain the brush/grass within the right-of-way, the City will attempt to contact the property owner to remind them of their responsibility to perform the maintenance (EMC 8.08 Removal of Vegetation). If a property owner still fails to complete the maintenance, overgrown vegetation complaints will be referred to Code Enforcement.
One or two times per year Streets maintenance division staff use tractor mowers to cut vegetation back from the edge of the pavement in undeveloped areas and drainage ditches unless the property owner maintains the area to City standards. Please keep these areas clear. Residents are responsible to maintain the areas near fences, mailboxes, or other objects.
Trees
Streets maintenance division staff also respond to requests for tree clearance maintenance on City rights-of-way. Property owners are required to take care of the maintenance (EMC 8.08 Removal of Vegetation). When the property owner fails to complete the maintenance to minimum standards, tree complaints are referred to Code Enforcement.
Each year the Street department staff perform tree trimming on selected arterial streets. Property owners may be given the option to perform the work themselves. Clearance trimming must be completed to the minimum standards. Streets crews trim for street and sidewalk clearance. Tree shape, health and aesthetics are not prioritized. Selecting the correct tree for the location and regular maintenance are encouraged for tree health and appearance.

Sidewalk repair and maintenance is the responsibility of the property owner, occupant or agent. This includes the removal of snow and ice. Snow and ice are to be removed by noon. For more information, see City of Everett Municipal Code 13.08.010-020. View or download the sidewalk construction (PDF).

Street sweeping
The goal is to sweep residential neighborhoods on a 6-8 week schedule. The business areas and arterials are swept weekly. The Central Business District (CBD) is hard to sweep due to the number of buildings that have businesses on the 1st floor and residents on the upper floors. To minimize the impact of sweeping in the CBD, the area is swept in two hour increments, two days per week.
Streets' staff maintain:
- 270 alleys
- 290 miles of roadway
- 750 miles of sidewalks and walkways
