15 countries are scheduled to take part in Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2008. Participating broadcasters: Armenia (ArmTV), Belarus (BTRC/First channel), Belgium (VRT/Een), Bulgaria (BNT), Cyprus (CyBC), FYR Macedonia (MKTV), Georgia (GPB), Greece (ERT), Lithuania (LRT), Malta (PBS), The Netherlands (AVRO), Romania (TVR), Russia (Russia/RTR), Serbia (RTS), Ukraine (NTU/First).

There are some changes to rules of JESC 2009: for the first time system of 50/50 jury+televoting will be used. Also from this edition only 6 performers are allowed on stage and not 8. Another significant change is that grown-up people are now officially allowed to help children with writing the songs, but the rights still must remain to children.

Junior Eurovision 2008 coverage - another success for ESCKaz. After becoming the most comprehensive site on Eurovision Dance Contest 2008 ESCKaz has also conquered the title of most visited Junior Eurovision related website, beating official site junioreurovision.tv
In both 2007 and 2008 ESCKaz was the only international English language mass-media operating live from the venue, besides official site and host broadcaster websites and participating broadcasters' crews. 15/11 Most of the participating countries are organizing these days press-conferences and see-off concerts for their 2008 Junior Eurovision entrant.

We've already reported about see-off concert for Georgian participants Bzikebi that took place yesterday.
Last week similar concert was held by Maltese Daniel Testa, who is also scheduled to appear tonight in Euroshow box ESC 2009 preselection.
Last week Romanian representatives appeared in TVR Iasi show "Atentie se canta!" and on local radio.
Belarus preparation period ended with a concert of Dasha, Alina and Karina as well as previous JESC representatives in Karina's home town of Baranovichi.
Yesterday, Cypriot representatives Elena and Charis presented their song in morning show of local broadcaster Sigma TV.
Yesterday, Macedonian broadcaster has held a press-conference with Bobi Andonov. Bobi informed local mass-media that he is really excited going to Cyprus and that most important for him is to represent his country on a good level, but also simply to have fun socializing with other participants and enjoying the beauty of Cyprus. "It will be the place of friendship", told Bobi.
Yesterday, Belgian singer Oliver has performed his entry in Peter Van de Veire program "'Peter Live".
Ukraine will broadcast see-off concert of Victoria Petrik with participation of other Ukrainian singers later today.
Russian broadcaster will show today Misha Puntov's performance in Ice Age show which is featuring Dima Bilan on ice. You can already watch this video at Russia page. Misha will also appear in Saturday Night show.
Today, as we earlier reported, Dutch participant Marissa will be featured in Junior St. Festival show on Z@pp.

Special broadcast to take place in The Netherlands on 15th of November at 19.00. Santa Claus arrives in the Netherlands. This year he will visit the finalists of the Junior Songfestival. The Junior St. Festival CD and DVD with all Santa Claus Songs of the finalists of 2007 and 2008 is now in the shop.

14/11 Trio Bzikebi are the first participants to depart to Junior Eurovision 2008. As reported by GPB, prior to their departure from Tbilisi on 14th of November, the seeing-off party was organized in Tskneti settlement on Tbilisi outskirts. Father Johan of Tskneti Virgin Mary Church blessed the trio and presented the group with icons. Contenders of the 2008 JESC are Tskneti locals.

ESCKaz has already reported it previously, however, due to some requests we clarify: according to Junior Eurovision rules Ukraine opted not to broadcast Junior Eurovision 2008 live. It is the mourning day in the country: Holodomor Remembrance Day. Contest will be broadcasted on Sunday, 21.15 local time.

Ukraine will be using only professional jury, which will determine 100% of the voting of the country.

13/11 Prior to the departure to Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2008 girl trio Dasha Nadina, Alina Molosh and Karina Zhukovich have performed at the concert in town of Baranovichi. As was informed by head of Mulyavin's National Center of Music Arts Svetlana Statsenko, in the home town of one of the members of trio Karina Zhukovich, publich very warmly greeted young performers and wished them success at the international level. On 15th of November trio will depart to Cyprus.

Meanwhile, NTU has published an interview with the participant of Junior Eurovision 2008 Victoria Petrik. Here we give translation of selected moments from it.

- Vika, how many times per a day do you sing your song "Sailor", aren't you tired from it already?
- Not at all, as I wrote it myself. I think it is very cool song. And moreover, I like marine theme, fish etc

- Do you feel a responsibility due to the fact that next year's Junior Eurovision will be held in Kiev?
- No, I just want to represent Ukraine on a good level, and of course win. But sometimes it is very hard when I imagine how many people are hoping that I can bring the victory to Ukraine.

- Aren't you afraid of competition?
- No, I do not have competitors. I am confident in myself and I think that everyone has its own way and place in life. There are a lot of talented children everywhere.

- Who is helping you and whom would you like to thank?
- If it were not for my parents, I would not participate in the contest. I am very grateful to them that they support me in any situation.
Diana Dorozhkina also adds me confidence. She prepares stage costumes for my performances. The one that I'll take to Eurovision - will be the fifth already.

This Saturday, at 17.30 Moscow time channel Russia will broadcast show "Star Ice", where Junior Eurovision 2008 entrant Misha Puntov will perform "Spit Angel" accompanying the ice dancing performance of the couple of Eurovision winner Dima Bilan and his partner Elena Berezhnaya. Satellite channel RTR planeta will broadcast it on the same day, at 18.45 CET. Shootings of the show took place on 10th of November.
We remind you that Dima Bilan will be special guest of Junior Eurovision in Cyprus on 22nd of November. Winner of Eurovision-2008 has told to Russian representative at Junior Eurovision a farewell words: "I believe, where is Russia - there is a victory!".

On 15th of November at 16.00 local kids Bibigon channel will broadcast repeat of national preselection for JESC 2008. The contest itself will be broadcasted on Russia and RTR-Planeta channels on 22nd of November. Motto of the broadcast: "Only Russia - Only victory!"

Head of the Russian preselection committee composer Grigory Gladkov believes that Misha Puntov will become a brand, which will be emulated in the whole world. "Misha Puntov - is typically Russian, with extraordinary charisma, Russian spirit and expanse. I am confident that he will be the winner. If I say differently, I won't be Russian. I thought his voice now is on the verge of age mutation, but it's not important. The most intelligent profession in the world - is the director. Meaning of the direction is that the shortage can become an advantage. We have such professionals that they will create from this charm and the brand, and the whole world will sing like Misha. I am confident that Misha will bring Grand Prix to Russia for the fourth time in a row, and all those who are engaged in an information war against us, will hang and shoot themselves. In the history of Eurovision there was a phenomenal case, which must be investigated by sociologists and politologists - for the three years in a row, children from Russia and Belarus are winners of the Grand Prix. And despite all the negative media background against our country, our children are winning. People can not be fooled - our Soviet children enter the stage and win. May be there is Soviet education system in their eyes, or may be they conquer with other things, but for three years in a row - this is simply fantastic. "

Official Junior Eurovision 2008 CD has been released and is available to order at the official Eurovision shop for 19,95 Euros + shipping. It is unclear yet, whether CD is again double, with 2nd disc containing karaoke versions of participating entries. So far, there is no sign of album in official download shop.

However, as our colleagues from Eurosong.be have recently reported, it is possible that this year CD will not be released by EMI Belgium, because of low sales in previous years (only around 4000 copies are being sold, compared to more than 20 000 of the national selection compilation). As official CDs of JESC are also never released in CIS countries, it is yet remain to be seen how many countries will see this release, or it will remain only an internet shop product.

As earlier reported by ESCKaz, there will be no DVD release this year.

05/11 Belgian VRT has announced their broadcasting plans and additional information on preparations of the singer Oliver to the Junior Eurovision 2008.

Charming Chloe, who finished 2nd in Junior Eurosong 2008 with her ballad Un nouveau reve will be Belgian spokesperson at the event. Chloe is very honoured to get this role and is now already secretly rehearsing in front of the bath room mirror.

Never change a winning team, VRT thought, and therefore Ben Roelants and Kristien Maes just like last year, will be providing expert comments from Limassol to the Belgian viewers. Ben is working at Donna and also presents "De Naaktkalender" on Een, but fans mainly know him as the presenter of Junior Eurosong 2008. Kristien also has worked for Donna and currently presents the Hit 50 on Studio Brussels. The younger viewers and listeners also know her as Ketnet presenter and as one of the familiar voices of Ketnet radio.

It appears that Belgian entrant, Oliver, is the oldest of all participants of JESC 2008, being 15. Dutch Marissa is second oldest, but few monthes younger than Oliver. If you sum the total age of all candidates, you can get exactly three hundred years or an average age of 12 years. Romania, Georgia, Cyprus and Lithuania have the youngest participants of 10 years, the minimum age to participate.

In recent weeks and days Oliver has plenty of work on a new act for the festival. In the preliminary rounds, he was surrounded by musicians, but in the finals that will no longer be the case. The piano is still Oliver's central act.

Charlott, Emily and Elisabeth are the three professional dancers who will assist Oliver. The idea behind the choreography of Farid Ait Mouloud, who also cooperated with Junior Eurosong 2008, is the game of attraction and rejection� To make everything even more powerful, a percussionist will appear on stage as well. He will be using two giant gong basses, so be prepared for a powerful Belgian act! The percussionist, Michael, is not unknown to the fans of the contest, because last year he performed with Bab in the Junior Eurosong. You can watch rehearsal report from "De Rood Loper" show here.

A new act also brought a change of costumes. Stylist Mark Wauters chose Oliver and his dancers a stylish, contemporary outfit with predominantly white shades.

In Belgium, the "Shut Up" single is already four weeks in Ultratop 50 and in the Flemish top 10, the Kids Top 20 and the top 3 of Ketnet radio. The album Junior Eurosong 2008 has reached gold status. In its eighth week album occupies 4th place in the charts.

Oliver wanted to do something for his fans and ended with an original way to surprise them. Last week he appeared in the studio to record an English version of "Shut up" to take. This song won't be for sale, but can be downloaded for free at http://www.olivereurosong.be/

05/11 Marissa Grasdijk, Dutch Junior Eurovision representative was hurt yesterday in a car accident. As reported by Telegraph, 14-years old Marissa and her 17-year-old sister Danita have been returning back home from a singing lessons on a scooter, when it collided with a car. Car driver claimed that he hasn't seen the scooter, which was heavily damaged. Both girls were moved to ambulance, but could return home same evening.

In hospital, Marissa's left leg was put in plaster, and it was discovered that Danita broke her collarbone. However, Marissa's participation in the Junior Eurovision, on November 22 in Cyprus, is not endangered. On Monday plaster may be already removed. "I was very scared as I thought first I may had broke my leg", told young singer. "But even if it happened I would have gone to Junior Eurovision in a wheel chair", she bravely told. 31/10 Construction of the stage has started yesterday at the Spyros Kyprianou arena. You can follow construction diaries here at Skinotechniki website.
On day 1 the sports arena floor was covered with a floor protection specially imported from Italy.
On day 2 German company Procon started work on construction of equipment.
Day 3: Lysandros, the structural engineer, arrives on site to supervise the installation of nearly 40tonnes of equipment on the arena steel roof.
Day 4: The lighting grid was completed tonight. Skinotechniki will be moving in tomorrow morning to start erecting the stage.
Day 5: The first pieces of stage set are moved into the arena.
Day 6: The stage floor is being fitted today.

28/10 Romanian broadcaster TVR has updated it's Junior Eurovision pages, creating mini site for Madalina and Andrada. It is also possible that a further updated version of the site will be launched closer to the contest - but for the time being you can access it here. TVR commentators once again will be Ioana Isopescu and Alexandru Nagy from local studio, and spokesperson again will be Iulia Ciobanu. Romanian TVR has not yet set the date and time for the preview show broadcast due to the local elections.

27/10 Interview The biggest interest in Junior Eurovision Song Contest from all participating countries clearly is in The Netherlands. Every year around 1000 entries are submitted to the national preselection. This year country will be represented by young singer Marissa which will perform the song "1 dag" (1 day). Limassol gears up for Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Limassol Municipality yesterday announced a series of side-events taking place around the date of the contest, aiming to create a jubilant atmosphere in the host city, reports Cyprus-Mail and other local Cypriot press.

Specifically, the municipality aims to bring carnival to Limassol a bit sooner this year, by organising a carnival parade on November 17 so that Junior Eurovion visitors can also experience some of the festival�s atmosphere. Decoration of Limassol squares and coast highway with colourful flags and ornaments is already underway. "We would like to call all carnival-lovers to wear their costumes a bit sooner this year and participate in the parade so that we show our guests our town�s traditions and the way Limassol has fun", said Andreas Christou, Mayor of Limassol at a press conference yesterday at Town Hall. The carnival parade will start at the east side of the promenade, will take place on the seafront road and will end at Lanitis Carob Mill, near the medieval castle, where festivities will take place. Junior Eurovision contestants will participate in the procession. In addition to the parade, the Municipality will organise a celebration for all contest participants at the castle, with a carnival theme. Contestants will perform at the celebration and a DJ will then take over.

The main themes of the 6th Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be �Sun and Sea�, which will also influence the contest�s graphics and stage scenery. As indicated by the Director-General of the RIK Themis Themistocleous a series of never-before-seen features will be used on the day, including the use of a spider camera and a plunge cam for the enjoyment of TV viewers. For the first time, TV crews will also be allowed back stage. Meanwhile, the Junior Eurovision stage is already ready to be transported to the arena, and next week it's construction will start. The show will take place at the Spyros Kyprianou stadium, a closed venue with a 6,000-seat capacity, three large rooms, a press centre, two conference rooms and over 20 changing rooms. The sale of tickets for the show is going faster than last year, the best seats have already been sold out and it is expected that whole venue will be sold out by the day of the contest.

Guest stars will include the winner of this year's Eurovision Song Contest, Russian singer Dima Bilan, Evridiki & Dimitris Korgialis and last year�s Junior Eurovision winner Alexei Zhigalkovich, who will award the prize to the winner. As ESCKaz earlier presented, Cypriot composer Costas Kakoyiannis wrote UNICEF themed song for the contest, with lyrics by Pambos Kouzalis, to be performed by the 77 kids, taking part in the show. Presenters� clothes were designed by fashion designer Erotokritos.

ESCKaz has received additional information on the organization of 2008 event from EBU Manager of Communications and PR Mr. Bakker. He informed us, that indeed there will be a major changes in the way national juries will be formed this year:

"At the essence, a back-up jury is meant to provide a back-up of the televoting. But if you mix 50/50, a jury should of course look at things from a different perspective", undelined Mr.Bakker. This year the juries will have six members plus a neutral person/notary and a chairman who are not allowed to vote. The jury members must be music professionals, 3 male and 3 female. They must be 16 years or older.

(Previously, back-up juries at the Junior Eurovision included 8 members, 4 of them below 16 years and earlier this year Reference Group Chairman Mr. De Coninck-De Boek was hinting there won't be changes in it and kids should be kept in jury, however, as now confirmed it will not happen).

The voting, as in previous years, will start at the beginning of the show right before the first song. The calculation of the 50/50 percent mix will be run as follows: Both the televoting and the Jury are ranked there the best song receives 12 points, 2nd best 10 points, � and the 10th best song 1 point. After that the two results are summed up. The song with the most points from the televoting and the Jury receives 12 points, the 2nd 10 points, etc. In case of a tie, the result with the better televoting result will prevail.

EBU also confirmed that there will be an official CD album, to be released in early November. Due to low market interest, there will be no official DVD this year as well as last year.

Does it mean that there will be no official CD release, as according to JESC rulebook only 30 second extracts of studio mp3s can be made available at official site of the competition? ESCKaz will try to confirm this question with EBU. Meanwhile, enjoy the songs in good quality absolutely for free.
(Note that Dutch entry is for some reason currently available in karaoke version on CyBC site, and Russian entry is the only one exceeding 2.45 limit) - dutch link fixed now.

After withdrawal from 2008 edition of JESC 2007 participants Sweden and Portugal, of preliminary confirmed Bosnia & Herzegovina, Israel and Azerbaijan, and rumours of possible withdrawal from JESC 2009 of Belgium and The Netherlands in case of poor positioning in Limassol, another rumour has surfaced today. According to unconfirmed report of Greek newspaper E-Tipos Greek broadcaster ERT is considering possible withdrawal from Junior Eurovision next year due to low ratings and poor classification of Greek entrants in the competition. "The whole event promotes participation of children in so-called "star system" and expose them to risks, because there are no necessary defense mechanisms and while the cost of participation in the show is high, the audience figures are not on a good level". Newspaper summarizes that JESC in Cyprus is likely the last JESC with Greek entrant in it.

Meanwhile, Bosnian broadcaster BHRT has confirmed broadcasting Junior Eurovision Song Contest live from Limassol, despite not taking part in it. BHRT commentator will be Dejan Kukric.

15/10 As early as today, host broadcaster CyBC has made available preview videos of this year entries, which you can watch on this link.
Unfortunately, proper preview videos this year have been produced only by Armenian (using very much changed version of the song) and Georgian broadcaster (it was partially used as preview for the national selection, but now includes changed song version) - and both of them are based on cartoon animation. Belgian, Cypriot and Serbian videos are also using some additional scenes to the national performance. All other countries are using national selection videos as previews, most of them however overdubbed (Belarus, Bulgaria, Greece). Lithuanian video is winner's reprise.

We will let you know the schedule of broadcast of preview videos at participating channels, as soon as information is available.

Steve De Coninck-De Boeck (VRT Belgium) was re-elected for a 2-year term as Chairman of the EBU JESC Steering Group. He invited all participating EBU Members to consider a bid for the 2010 edition of the contest. The deadline for that is the end of 2008. Partnership of EBU and UNICEF will continue. The United Nations Children�s Fund will again be donated the revenue from the televoting.
A joint UNICEF themed song will be introduced once again, this time titled "Hand In Hand" - commissioned by UNICEF and composed by Costas Cacoyannis with lyrics by Pambos Kouzalis (Parakentro studio).
Dima Bilan will perform two songs, one of them being "Believe", ESC 2008 winner. Online broadcast of the final at junioreurovision.tv was aslo confirmed.
Accreditation of the mass-media for Junior Eurovision 2008 is ungoing and will be closed on 31st of October.

A week after Junior Eurovision 2008 in Cyprus two other major events of children music will take place: MGP Nordic 2008 in Denmark on 29th of November and New Wave Junior 2008 in Russia on 28-29th of November (featuring former JESC participants Lina Jureviciute and Denis Dimoski). 13/10 Delivering News First
Today, heads of delegations of participating countries will gather to the second Heads of Delegations meeting. It is expected that from 13.00 till 14.30 Welcome reception and draw of the running order will take place. During this meeting all entries will be officially submitted to the organizers of the competition. Steering group of the contest is already is in Cyprus, their meeting has started one day earlier than HoDs meeting. On the discussion table are the questions on preparations to the contest, including important clarification of jury/televoting procedure.
We will be delivering the news from the meetings first here at ESCKaz. Additional information on the organization of the contest is available at the event page.

Hosts of the contests Sophia Paraskeva and Alex Michael have conducted live the first part of the draw in Atlantica Miramare Hotel. During it the first performer, last performer and position of the host country have been drawn. CyBC�s Assistant Director General, Michalis Stylianou had the honour of drawing Cyprus� place in the competition. The Heads of Delegation were treated to a �Horos tis Datchas� dance by Christos Chakallis. They were invited to drink a glass of Commandaria inside which was hidden their place.

Belarus is the most successful country at the Junior Eurovision contest nowadays, winning 2005 and 2007 editions and finishing 2nd in 2006. This year, mother of Ksenia Sitnik and producer of Ksenia and Andrei Kunets Svetlana Statsenko brings a new concept to the contest - an all girls trio. 08/10 Azerbaijan Public Television and Radio Broadcasting Company paid a fine to European Broadcasting Union, because it refused to participate in Junior Eurovision 2008, Fuzuli Ismayilov, Department Head of Public Television and Radio Broadcasting Company on Music, Feature and Entertaining Programs informed today Azerbaijan State News Agency APA.

Ismayilov mentioned that Azerbaijan participated in Eurovision Song Contest and Eurovision Dance Contest in 2008. He stated: "Azerbaijan wanted to attend Junior Eurovision contest, but we searched for child or a group of children, who will feel themselves comfortable on a big stage, in front of millions of people watching the contest on TV. There are such children in Azerbaijan, but they should be prepared for such a responsible performance. There should be special structures responsible for children preparations rather than the broadcaster. We can only broadcast the events of EBU, but issue of preparation is not in the competence of the company", he said.
Ismayilov added that one company is not enough for the preparation to the contest. "The candidates should be suggested by proper structures, For example, Anna Sajina and Eldar Dzhafarov, representing Azerbaijan in EDC were proposed by Azerbaijan Dance Sport Federation. Public Television has submitted proper aplication and paid participation fee for Junior Eurovision, we were not thinking on withdrawing. However, as we have not received assisting and consultations in our search for junior talents, we decided to pull out from the contest, not to harm image created by our successful performances in previous two Eurovision events. We have paid a fine to EBU, and now should start proper preparation for Eurovision Song Contest 2009", he said.

Update: According to the statement, the EBU regrets, but respects the decision of the broadcaster. Svante Stockselius, Executive Supervisor of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of the EBU, expressed his hope that Azerbaijan will compete in next year�s competition in Kyiv, Ukraine. Due to late withdrawal, the Azerbaijani broadcaster will have to pay their full participation fee.

07/10 Status of Azerbaijan participation is still uncertain. Earlier, ESCKaz has received confirmation from CyBC stating that "Yes, we can confirm that Azerbaijan has pulled out. The reasons of the withdrawal are not disclosed. This will mean that we have to make some changes in preparations". News on Azerbaijan withdrawal were also published on CyBC website.
However, today EBU has stated to us: "We are still in discussion with the broadcaster about this topic. Further information about the status of their participation will be announced no later than the Heads of Delegation meeting", and paragraph on the withdrawal has been removed from CyBC site.

Locally, there was no announcement of any kind from the national broadcaster. However, there appeared statement from the head of "Dzhan Bala" ensemble (considered primary candidate to take part in the contest), composer Mariam Alibeili, who stated: "We've even started preparation for the contest. Our kids have big potential and they could have been very successful, if we've received some support. But unfortunately, ITV has made no proposal to us. It is bad thing that Azerbaijan has pulled out from the contest".
