Tyneside

 

a conurbation in Great Britain, situated along the Tyne River. The city of Newcastle is at its center. In 1974, Tyneside and the city of Sunderland were joined together into the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear, with a population of 1.2 million (1974). Tyneside has harbor facilities, large-scale shipbuilding, heavy machine building, and electrical engineering. There is also a food industry and other enterprises, including fishing. Coal is exported from Tyneside.
