Soputan
a volcano in Indonesia, located on the Minahassa peninsula at the northeastern end of the island of Celebes. A cone-shaped volcano, Soputan rises 580 m above an older volcanic foundation to an elevation of 1,661 m. Since 1780 there have been more than 40 cycles of eruptions. Eruptions have been both purely eruptive and with discharges of andesite lava. In 1906 a secondary crater formed at the northeastern foot of Soputan, and subsequent eruptions have originated from this crater.
