Six hundred home guards from Posey, Vanderburgh, and Warrick Counties, with five pieces of artillery and 450 troops of the Forty-sixth and Thirty-second Indiana Volunteers, crossed the Ohio and occupied Uniontown for several days.
The Legion was called up in the border counties and four days later, six companies of militiamen from Decatur County and two each from Lafayette and Terre Haute were hastily mustered into service as the 77th Indiana Volunteers. On July 22, the regiment crossed the river and took possession of Henderson without opposition.
In Posey County, a whole battalion joined the 24th Indiana Volunteers. The 7th Regiment was reduced from one thousand men to 125, by the second year of the war.
On that day, a Union force consisting of troops from the 2nd Texas Cavalry, the 34th
Indiana Volunteers and the 62nd Coloured Infantry clashed with a similar sized Confederate force at Palmetto Ranch.
