El Bajío

 

a basin in Mexico, on the southern Mexican plateau, in the basin of the Río Turbio, a right tributary of the Rio Lerma. The predominant altitude is 1,000–2,000 m. The climate is mild mountain-tropical. The average temperature is about 12° C in December and about 18° C in May. Precipitation is about 550 mm a year. October to May is the dry season. The soil is fertile, so that El Bajío is a main agricultural region of central Mexico. Wheat, corn, and vegetables are grown. The main city is León.
