Caption: Abreva utilizes
docosanol for deep penetration.
Docosanol (Abreva) is an over-the-counter cream for cold sores.
As topical medications, penciclovir (Denavir[R]) and
docosanol (Abreva[R]) are prescribed for treatment and prevention of orofacial herpes simplex (Vallerand et al., 2017).
Several topical medications (acyclovir, penciclovir,
docosanol) modestly decrease healing time and pain duration--typically by less than a day--and require multiple doses per day (SOR: B, multiple RCTs).
TOP TIP: new Blistex Cold Sore Cream PS6.99, contains the active ingredient
docosanol. It's the first time this 'magic' ingredient has been available in the UK after having huge success in the US.
Prescription and over-the-counter topical antivirals, such as
docosanol, acyclovir, and penciclovir, speed healing by about half a day.
Meanwhile, currently available prescription and over-the-counter topical antivirals, such as
docosanol, acyclovir, and penciclovir, speed healing by only about half a day.
Docosanol (Abreva[R]), a behenyl alcohol, became the first over-the-counter (OTC) antiviral drug sold in the U.S.
Acyclovir cream shortens outbreaks by about 0.5 to 0.6 days; penciclovir cream by 0.7 to 1 day, and
docosanol cream, by 18 hours, Dr.
The macromonomers used in this study were derived from dodecanol, octadecanol, and
docosanol. The details of stepwise synthesis are described elsewhere.
