Abomasotomy

 

a surgical method of opening the abomasum, or fourth stomach, of a ruminant by an incision in the abdominal wall. It was first proposed in 1936 by the Soviet veterinary surgeon S. G. El’tsov for the removal of solid formations of plant and animal origin (bezoars) in sheep. Abomasotomy is also used to treat cattle with volvulus or obstruction of the abomasum by solid food masses and sand.
