Named after Chinese president 孫中山 (Sun Yat-sen), who used the pseudonym (なか)(やま)(きこり) (Nakayama Kikori). Ultimately from the Japanese surname (なか)(やま) (Nakayama).

Zhongshan, Guangdong was renamed from 香山 (Xiāngshān); Sun Yat-sen's birthplace is in Zhongshan.
