    Etymology 1

    edit

Possibly generalized from the sole example of تكسلن (tkaslan, to act lazy). Though originally derived from كسلان (kaslān, kislān, lazy), its root is identifiably ك س ل (k s l) owing to the adjective's morphology and perhaps knowledge of other terms like كَسَل (kasal, laziness), so the verb could have divorced itself from the adjective and had its ـن (-n) metanalyzed as a pejorative verbal root extension.

(Other ‘primary’ examples obtain, like بهسان (bahsān, bihsān, layabout, lethargic person) yielding تبهسن (tbahsan, to act lethargic, lazy), but none are as frequent as تكسلن (tkaslan, to act lazy).)

    Suffix

    edit

    ـن (n)

    1. Extension for triliteral roots that creates typically pejorative verbs and verbal nouns: فَعْلَن (faʕlan; CaCCan)
    Derived terms
    edit
    • تحمرن (tḥamran, to act like a dumbass)
    • تسطلن (tsaṭlan, to act blockheaded)
    • تكلبن (tkalban, to act selfish, greedy, with cowardice)
    • تلأمن (tlaʔman, to be vindictive, vicious)
    • تموضن (tmawḍan, tmōḍan, to act trendy)
    • تهبلن (thablan, to act like an idiot)
    • تهضمن (thaḍman, to act cutesy)
    • دبشنة (dabšane, rude, oafish behavior)

    Etymology

    edit

Alteration of an earlier (*l) as in Maltese -il, in turn a sporadic alteration of the ـَر (-ar) of Arabic عَشَر (ʕašar, -teen). This ـَر (-ar) disappeared across dialects from 'standalone' teens sooner than on teens used attributively/in construct state; compare South Levantine Arabic خمستعش (ḵamstaʕš, fifteen) but خمستعشر كتاب (ḵamstaʕšar ktāb, fifteen books).

The ultimate alteration to ن (n) could reflect leveling to subsequent ـِين (-īn, -ty).

    Particle

    edit

    ن (n)

    1. suffixed on numbers actively enumerating items whose remainders, when divided by 100, happen to be [11,19]
      خمَستَاشنِ كتِابḵmastāš-ne-ktēbfifteen books
      ميِة وسبَعتَاشنِ كتِابmye wsbaʕtāš-ne-ktēbA hundred and seventeen books
